2023 GMC Yukon Transmission Problems

2023 GMC Yukon Transmission Problems

The GMC 2023 Yukon is a popular SUV with a large size that accommodates seven passengers.  The manufacturer claims its 2023 GMC Yukon is “the pinnacle of styling, luxury and technological innovation.” However, many 2023 GMC Yukon owners have reported transmission problems consisting of harsh shifts and shuddering between gears.

We have posted in our lemon law blog in the past about problems with the 2021-2022 GMC Yukon and the 2024 GMC Yukon.

2023 GMC Yukon Transmission Problems Summary

  • Delayed gear engagement
  • Delayed acceleration
  • Gear Shift Flare
  • Speed Sensor Faults
  • Banging noises or Harsh Shifts

2023 GMC Yukon Transmission Delays

Whenever you drive your 2023 GMC Yukon, forward and reverse engagement should be smooth. A delay in movement, forward or backward, indicates a problem called delayed engagement, which is a common and expensive transmission problem. Transmission slippage is often caused by sluggish clutches in the transmission system.

2023 GMC Yukon SUV cars suffer from delayed engagement problems after being inactive overnight or for several hours. As a result, there may be transmission slippage or even a complete lack of transmission response.

In periods of inactivity, torque converter fluid may flow back into the sump. Restarting the engine causes the transmission pump to refill the torque converter, which delays engagement.

A 2023 Yukon owner complains to Yukon Forum the following transmission delay:

We picked up our 23 Yukon Denali XL last week. It came with 3 miles on it and we still have under 100. When accelerating at slow speeds, like you would pulling away from a suburban stop sign or just in traffic it seems to hunt for a gear coming out of 2nd gear. Sometimes it’s coming out of 1st gear. When it finds the next gear the vehicle jerks. Since there is a pause in momentum and you are pushing the pedal down further, when it finds the gear the RPMs are higher and you get a jerk. Not like a shift kit (I’m old school) but enough to make passengers ask why did you hit the gas. It makes it impossible to drive smoothly. My wife is experiencing the same results. Under medium throttle the problem goes away but you can’t drive like that everywhere.

GMC Yukon Acceleration Problems

Despite having an automatic transmission, your Yukon continues to shift gears as you accelerate and decelerate. A problem like delayed engagement can be very noticeable as you increase speed or slow down.

An acceleration problem is characterized by a surge in RPMs when you hit the gas pedal that does not correspond to the ability of the engine to accelerate. The GMC Yukon transmission components are most always at fault for this problem.

Just read this 2023 Yukon Transmission complaint by a California owner to NHTSA:

The contact owns a 2023 GMC Yukon. The contact stated while approaching a stop light at an undisclosed speed, the (2023 GMC Yukon) vehicle stalled and lost motive power. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact shifted the vehicle into park and restart the vehicle. Once the vehicle restarted, the vehicle started operating normally. The vehicle was taken to the dealer but was not repaired. A software update was performed however, the failure reoccurred. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 3,000.

Transmission Problems with the 2023 GMC Yukon

2023 GMC Yukon owners describe their SUV’s transmission problems as a shaking or hard shifting resulting in hesitation or lurching between gears.  Problems such as gear shift flare and speed sensor faults are symptoms of a failing GMC Yukon Transmission.

1. Gear Shift Flare

When the Yukon engine shifts upward, its RPMs spike before settling back down to a normal range, which is called gear shift flare. Shift flare occurs when the clutches aren’t fully applied between gears (during a shift). When you have a shift flare, it feels like a very long shift, or your RPMs spike during the shift (if you have a newer vehicle, it cuts the fuel off during the shift).

2. Speed Sensor Faults

The speed sensor, which determines how fast your Yukon is traveling by calculating how fast a toothed wheel rotates on a shaft inside the transmission, can also cause transmission problems.  Speed sensors in your transmission can affect more than just your speedometer. For your vehicle to run efficiently, the engine and transmission control systems use transmission speed sensors to make the necessary adjustments. Cruise control relies on this data as well.

A malfunctioning sensor will render the transmission torque converter unable to apply the clutch and form a mechanical link between the engine and transmission.

3. Here are 5 common bad speed sensor symptoms for the 2023 GMC Yukon

    • Inaccurate speedometer readings.
    • Inability to engage cruise control
    • Lack of torque converter clutch application
    • Check Engine Light
    • Abnormal automatic transmission operation
