When GM started back in 1908 with a few hundred cars, they never anticipated the thousands that would be on the road today or the problems they would be facing. Every manufacturer experiences defective components from time to time.

Transmission problems have cropped up in several vehicles, including the Ford F-150,  the 2018 Chevy Silverado, the GM 10 speed transmission, and now the 2016 GMC Yukon. The 2016 GMC Yukon has reports of 477 different problems. This is a drop from the 1,043 problems in the 2015 model.

When you experience vehicle defects, one of the first steps is to know your lemon law rights. Keep reading for information on what to do when you experience GMC transmission problems.

GMC Yukon Transmission Problems

The 2015 GMC Yukon was the worst year for the model, with more complaints than any other time. That year’s complaints included taillights not working, excessive consumption of oil, and air conditioning that did not work. By 2016 the problems depleted drastically, but still include the following:

  • Body and Paint Problems
  • Brake Problems
  • Drivetrain problems
  • Electrical Problems
  • Engine Problems
  • Exterior Accessory Problems
  • Lights Problems
  • Steering Problems
  • Suspension Problems
  • Transmission Problems

The three main complaints with the transmission are running rough, slipping, and shuddering, and shaking when shifting.

GM Transmission Lawsuit

Francis, et. Al., v. General Motors, LLC filed April 10, 2019, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, Southern Division alleges the Hydra-Matic 8L90 and 8L45 transmissions are defective. The lawsuit lists transmission problems in 15 GM vehicles, including the 2015-2019 Yukon, 2015-2019 Yukon XL, and 2015-2019 Yukon Denali XL.

The transmission problems in the lawsuit include slipping, bucking, kicking, jerking, and harshly engaging when shifting gears. The allegations include the transmissions suffering abnormal internal wear, delays in downshifts, sudden acceleration, and difficulty stopping. The complaint states the only remedy is to replace the transmission, and that lack of replacement creates a driving hazard.

GM’s response is that the plaintiffs’ complaint does not prove the vehicles are unfit for providing transportation. They also state that no one is claiming an inability to drive their vehicle.

This response led Judge David M. Lawson to state that GM’s actions are fraudulent. This is due to GM selling vehicles they knew to have an allegedly faulty transmission. Because of this, the judge’s determination is to deny in part and grant in part GM’s motion to dismiss the lawsuit.

What this means for you, is that there is an ongoing legal action that problems exist with this vehicle. If you are experiencing problems with your Yukon or Yukon Denali transmission you may be able to obtain compensation.
