Transmission Auto Start/Stop Problems with the 2019 Chevy Malibu

The 2019 Chevy Malibu comes with a continuous variable transmission (CVT). With the new CVT transmission, the 2019 Chevy Malibu is designed to provide increased fuel economy and efficiency. Unfortunately, many Malibu owners are experiencing problems with their transmissions, such as losing power or hesitant shifting and the Auto Start/Stop system.

Read the reports by Malibu owners to NHTSA for transmission problems with both hesitation and Auto Start/Stop system

“I bought this 2019 Chevy Malibu….the second day I had it the transmission completely lost power and would not accelerate it barley moves ford it takes about 5 whole seconds for it to get power and move this has happened pretty much every day when I drive this vehicle it has put me and my family’s life in danger so many times it’s ridicules I have took it to the dealership and they said that they can not find a problem on the tcm/ transmission control module so I told them to take it for a test drive and right when they pulled out of the dealership they almost got hit because the car would not accelerate they said there is defiantly a problem with the cvt transmission in the car but sadly there is nothing they can do until Chevrolet puts out a recall they said I am not the first one to bring back a 2019 chevy Malibu with this issue this needs to be fixed immediately it’s putting peoples life’s in danger”

The contact owns a 2019 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact states that the Auto STOP/START feature that caused the vehicle to turn off while idling however, the vehicle would fail to immediately start-up. The contact stated that the instrument panel would independently reset, and the vehicle would jolt forward before restarting. The contact had taken the vehicle to the dealer however, the vehicle was not yet repaired.”

Malibu Electrical System Problems with “Shift to Park” System

The 2019 Chevy Malibu electrical system has been upgraded to include an electronic “Shift to Park” system.  Sadly, many Chevy Malibu owners are having problems with the electronic “Shift to Park”.  Malibu owners report not being unable to turn off their cars due to the inability to shift into park gear. In addition, Malibu owners are seeing a “Shift to Park” warning message on their instrument panel.

The 2019 Chevy Malibu “Shift to Park” problem has been reported numerous times to NHTSA. Chevy Malibu owners report:

I Get “Shift to Park” message when car is placed in park and turn off ignition. This seems to be a common error reported widely on 2016 through 2020 Chevrolet vehicles. I have even seen service bulletins mentioned. Why has Chevrolet not recalled this since it seems to be a weak switch used? This is not covered under the bumper-to-bumper warranty since I have 54,000 miles on a two year old car. This shouldn’t be failing after two years. Maybe after 10 years but not two!

Unable to leave vehicle because the car thinks the gear shift is not in park. The car is actually in park. I’ve tried wiggling the gear shift, turning the car back on several times and putting into gear and back in park. Nothing seems to work and it goes off whenever it decides to go off. This is causing a safety issue for me personally since I can’t leave the car. This started about 2months ago.

As a result of Chevy Malibu “Shift to Park” complaints Chevy has issued Service Bulletin # 19-NA-206 to address the Malibu “Shift to Park” problem.  According to the bulletin Chevy Malibu owners may experience an intermittent “Shift to Park” message when the vehicle has been shifted into Park, and the ignition has been turned to the Off position.  Chevy has advised the cause of the Shift to Park problem may be that the park switch in the transmission control (shifter) assembly is not pulling the BCM signal low to electronically show that the vehicle is in the Park position.
