Corvette Transmission Problems

2020-2023 Corvette Transmission Problems

The 2020-2023 Corvette’s sleek design and supercar performance have attracted widespread attention and was named 2023 Performance Car of The Year, by Road and Track.

With its sharp handling and explosive acceleration, the current C8 Corvette can compete with sports cars that cost tens of thousands more, but it’s also comfortable and refined enough for long distance driving.

Despite its outstanding features, the newly designed 2020-2023 Corvette has experienced numerous transmission problems.

Understanding the 2020-2023 Corvette Transmission Problems

From the moment the eighth generation 2020 (C8) Corvette was released, owners began complaining about transmission problems.

The most common corvette transmission problems involve the following defects:

  • Gasket Failures
  • Leaks
  • Error Messages telling Corvette owners to put the vehicle in park and take it in for servicing.

These problems prompted GM to investigate the matter and identify the causes of the Corvette Transmission problems.

Identifying the Corvette Transmission Problems – Causes and Solutions

Following numerous complaints about C8 Corvette transmission problems, GM launched an official investigation. According to GM’s filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, debris on the park position sensor magnet has been found to cause incorrect position readings.

In its NHTSA filing, GM took the following actions regarding the C8 Corvette Transmission Problems:

“The automaker sent out a letter to dealerships requesting technicians remove the transmission fluid filter when a 2020 or 2021 model-year Corvette comes in for its first scheduled maintenance at 7,500 miles. Technicians are instructed to carefully remove the filter, place it into a plastic bag without letting the fluid drain out of it and mark it with the associated vehicle’s mileage and VIN. The filters will then be returned to the warranty parts center and later inspected by GM engineers.”

In addition, GM also notified NHTSA that C8 Corvette transmission problems was allegedly being caused by “debris on the park position sensor magnet causing an incorrect position reading to the transmission control module.”

2020-2023 Corvette Owners Flood Internet with Transmission Complaints

Corvette forums flooded with owners reporting transmission problems.

Just read this 2023 Corvette Transmission Complaint on Redit

“My 2023 C8 (Corvette) just suffered full transmission failure at 675 miles. Has anyone else had this experience? I haven’t been launching it. Only very mild spirited driving. From Day 1 the downshifts we’re rough and even had delays from pressing the pedal to motion.  I was in the middle of a low speed turn and the car violently shifted to park and lit the Christmas tree. Transmission code is what the service center says but can’t fully diagnose it until Monday….No ETA on how long or even what the fix is….I waited 18 months for this car and it failed a month into ownership”

A Maryland owner of a 2022 Corvette reported another transmission failure to NHTSA.

“On Wednesday March 16, I was driving my 2022 C8 Corvette with only 450 miles on it. I stopped a red light and the car stalled out. I didn’t think anything of it and push to start it up again and it started as i continued to drive I approached another red light and as I stopped at it the car shut off and again and wouldn’t start back up, as I pushed the start button I smelled smoke and I stop trying to start the car. Oil pressure gauge was reading 0 pressure and flashing red. A notification came across the dash board indicating engine failure and also was notified by my app on my cell phone that the engine failed. Tow truck driver couldn’t put the car in neutral due to the vehicle not starting, having to drag onto the flatbed for towing back to dealer”

2020–2021 Corvette Transmission Recall

GM issued a recall for some 2020 and 2021 C8 Corvette models related to the Transmission Control Module of the vehicles, which may incorrectly clear Diagnostic Trouble Code communications from other control modules as a result of a direct communication loss. When this occurs, the gearbox will continue to operate in its default settings without illuminating the check engine light or adhering to previous DTCs. Dealers were instructed to reprogram the Transmission Control Module (TCM) with an updated software.   According to the GM Corvette Transmission Recall:

“General Motors has decided to conduct a Voluntary Emission Recall involving certain 2020 and 2021 model year Chevrolet Corvette vehicles,”

The Corvette Transmission Recall states, “The Transmission Control Module (TCM), after detecting a loss of communications fault with other control modules, may incorrectly clear the loss of communications Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) when the vehicle is keyed off and, if the loss of communications fault persists, may not detect it again when the vehicle is keyed back on. If this were to happen, the transmission could operate in a default mode with no DTC set and the MIL not illuminated.”
