2020 Volvo XC90

Volvo is more than a popular vehicle choice for car buyers. Since 1927, Volvo, which means “I  Roll”  has been a pioneer in safety research and an award-winning brand.

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Volvo was setting new global sales records year over year. In fact, in 2021  the company sold 698,693 vehicles. Among the vehicles sold was multi-award winner Volvo XC90. The Volvo XC90 was hailed by Yahoo Autos’ as Ride of the Year, and was noted as the North American Car and Truck of the Year at the Detroit Motor Show

Despite the popularity of the Volvo XC90, it does not come 100% problem-free. There have been several complaints, recalls, and investigations with the 2020 Volvo XC90. Below is a brief list, reviewing of each of the major 2020 Volvo XC90 problems.

Problem 1:  Electrical System

Owners of the 2020 Volvo XC90 have been experiencing electrical problems with touch screens and components.

According to a review on Edmunds, the customer states “Our NEW Volvo XC 90 has been in for service 5 times since purchased. So far everything [has been] an electrical problem…AC won’t turn on, screen goes blank, blinkers out, lights won’t work, mirrors won’t adjust, phone calls out and rings and you can’t cut it off, AC won’t turn on”

The complaint about electrical systems goes beyond the “convenience features”. A published service bulletin titled TJ3429510-2019-0 refers to the high voltage battery repairs by the automaker. The Volvo XC90 comes with an expensive price tag, despite its numerous problems. Whether it’s the battery failing and leaving owners unable to make it to work, or the entertainment system failing to deliver the comforts expected Volvo has a lot to answer for in terms of the Volvo CX90’s electrical system.

Problem 2: The Brake System

Volvo owners have been experiencing brake problems.  Several complaints can be found on Edmunds discussing their experience with brake malfunctions.

One Volvo owner complained:

“I bought the version that allegedly brakes for you, but I have tested it both on purpose and by accident and it seems to fail to go off every time. It constantly warns you that you are too close with the heads up display, but DOES NOT BRAKE.”

The brake problems in the Volvo XC90 are common and Volvo has issued a recall for the forward collision system.  According to the NHTSA campaign number 20V144000, more than 120,000 vehicles are equipped with software and hardware incompatibility that causes the AEB system to miss obstacles and not engage. It is much more likely that an accident will occur if this occurs.

Problem 3: The Suspension

An examination of the suspension system on the XC90 reveals a number of problems with the suspension. Consumers are taking to the National Highway Traffic Safety Association to inform others of the discrepancies.

One reviewer posted to NHTSA :

“ [I]purchased a new 2020 XC90 t6 inscription with the air suspension. from the first time pulling into our driveway, there was a distinct, muffled, aggressive “thump” in the front and rear end. the sound is independent from the front or rear suspension, depending on which is going over a bump. this occurs consistently when in slow speeds and going over an abrupt bump”

Despite numerous complaints regarding the XC90 suspension problems no recalls have been issued by Volvo.  Many owners of Volvo XC90 vehicles have continued to experience suspension problems with no relief or repair to correct them.
