Ford Motor Company recently recalled the 2021-2023 Ford Bronco Sport vehicle due to a defect with the fuel injector system that could result in an under-hood fire, increasing the risk of injury to the vehicle’s occupants. A total of 518,993 Ford Bronco and Ford Escape vehicles are affected by this recall.

Here are the details of the Ford Bronco Fuel System Injector Recall NHTSA campaign number: 22V859000:

  • The Problem – When the engine is running, fuel or fuel vapor could contact a hot surface under the hood and cause a fire.
  • Description of the Cause – The root cause is still under investigation. Based on analysis to date, a cracked fuel injector in the engine allows fuel to leak at a high rate (19L/ hour) into the cylinder head, which can travel out via a drain hole and down onto hot surfaces on the exhaust/turbo system where it may combust.
  • Warning Signs – A fuel leak may result in fuel odor both outside and inside the vehicle. If the fuel leak initiates a fire that progresses, the customer may notice smoke or flames emanating from the engine compartment or underbody.
  • Involved Components
    • Engine Control Software –  An updated engine control software will be installed to detect a pressure drop in the fuel rail, provide instrument cluster messaging to the customer to seek service
    • Drain Tube – A drain tube will also be installed to allow fuel to drain from the cylinder head
drain hole, away from surfaces which may initiate combustion, to the ground
      below the vehicle.
  • The Repair – To repair the Ford Bronco Fuel Injector problem, Ford dealers will provide free repairs (including parts and labor) to owners of affected vehicles with specific VINs when the necessary parts become available.
  • Description of Recall Schedule – Notification to dealers is expected to occur on November 22, 2022. Mailing of owner notification letters is expected to begin December 19, 2022 and is expected to be completed by December 23, 2022.

In accordance with the Highway Safety Act of 1970, vehicle manufacturers must repair any recalled issues or replace the defective part for free. If the dealer refuses to fix the problem or charges you for the repair, contact the manufacturer right away.
