The ID.4’s infotainment screen controls everything from navigation to climate settings. As a result of Volkswagen’s minimalist design, physical buttons have been replaced by touch-sensitive controls, allowing nearly all functions to be controlled from the screen. Performance of the screen is critical to car usability.

There have been many reports of VW ID.4 owners experiencing delayed responses or complete screen freezes.

Common VW ID.4 Screen System Issues

ID.4 owners have reported several recurring issues. When you’re driving, you can’t adjust settings like air conditioning or access navigation because of lag in touch response.

Many ID.4 owners have reported flickering screens, sudden reboots, and unresponsive screens.

Software Updates to Repair The Screen Problems: A Mixed Bag

Volkswagen has attempted to address these issues with over-the-air (OTA) screen software updates. Some updates improve performance, while others introduce bugs or don’t fix underlying defective screen problems. OTA updates also mean users have to wait for Volkswagen to release fixes, which can be frustrating for drivers.

VW ID.4 Screen Recall

NHTSA has issued a recall for the Volkswagen ID.4 because gauge clusters and infotainment screen systems suddenly reset or don’t appear. The VW ID.4 screen problems can result in the loss of speedometer information and the rearview camera, causing the ID.4 to be out of compliance with federal motor vehicle safety standards.

Due to a software issue, affected VW ID.4 vehicles may experience center displays and instrument panel displays that do not boot, or that sporadically reset. This can result in loss of speedometer information or loss of rearview camera image. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard numbers 101, “Control and Displays” and 111, “Rear Visibility.”
