2021 Chevy Tahoe

2021 Chevy Tahoe

The 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe is part of General Motors’ full-size SUV family. After its release in 1995, the Chevy Tahoe became one of the most popular SUVs for families looking for a 3rd row option.  The fully redesigned 2021 Chevy Tahoe features major improvements in ride comfort, technology, and convenience. GM claims its Chevy Tahoe “is one of the most distinguished full-size SUVs on the road“.   However many 2021 Chevy Tahoe owners are complaining of numerous problems such as electrical problems, transmission problems and engine defects and engine lifter failures.

Electrical Problems

The electrical system is critical to the functioning of modern SUVs, such as the 2021 Chevy Tahoe. A malfunctioning electrical system can significantly impair the safety and use of a vehicle. NHTSA has been notified of this electrical system problem by a 2021 Chevy Tahoe owner.

I purchased a 2021 Chevy Tahoe…Chevrolet 11-3-2020. I have taken my Tahoe to the service department numerous times – as my truck has had a stubborn service safety restraint system warning error code that continues to come on and off. I have taken it to have all recalls serviced as per recall request. The service safety restraint system warning code has not been corrected after more than 5-6 visits if not more as not all visits have been logged properly. I have had this truck for less than 12 months and have experienced too many conflicting issues. I do NOT feel safe driving my Tahoe with the SRS light on. There’s obviously a malfunction that you all have not been able to figure out. This is extremely dangerous!! What if I were to get involved in an accident or collision and my airbags do not deploy? I may have a problem with the airbags themselves, a loose wire, a faulty seat belt buckle, or a problem with the engine control unit which is causing the airbag warning to come on. There is obviously a major problem. I am putting my children and family at risk.

Chevy is aware of the electrical system problems with its 2021 Chevy Tahoe and has issued more than 160 communications to its dealers.  According to Communication Number: PIT5774D, a electrical problem in the overhead console is causing the sunroof to malfunction.

This Preliminary information communicates an issue with: Overhead Console Inoperative / Service Safety Restraints Message / Sunroof Inoperative / DTC’s B1A7A and U1121.  Dealers are to cycle the power to the overhead console to correct the issue.  Engineering has released updated roof consoles to correct this concern.  Dealers are to replace the roof console.

Transmission Problems

Many 2021 Chevy Tahoe owners are complaining of transmission problems.  One owner reports to Cars.com:

Picked up my new 2021 Chevy Tahoe about a week ago..Drove it less than 200 miles and the transmission went…I repeat..I need a new transmission on the most expensive car I have ever owned…I have owned German, Japanese, and American cars and this is the first time ever I have had to replace a transmission and its on a car I’ve had for a week..

Or just read this transmission complaint to NHTSA about a 2021 Chevy Tahoe shifting into neutral on its own:

After turning off a major highway (65 mph) onto a side road after driving for approximately eight hours, the transmission shifted into N…on its own. The engine continued to run but the vehicle would not move. We could not shift into P, R or D. When attempting to shift into P, R or D, an error message appeared on the dashboard that said “Conditions not right for shifting.” We turned the vehicle off and then back on and the error cleared. The vehicle continued to drive “normally” for another two hours and the end of the journey. Had this happened in the middle of heavy traffic, a deadly accident could have occurred…There were no warning signs or messages prior to the incident. I’m guessing it is a sensor or software problem related to the engine/transmission.

The transmission complaints continue on Edmunds with a 2021 Chevy Tahoe owner stating “I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE A PEACH, BUT IT WAS A LEMON”

Bought myself a brand spankin’ new 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe in Oct. 2020….Then in April the engine light comes on with the message “Service Transmission”. A few more miles and the message went to “Service Transmission Immediately or vehicle will shut down” I take it to the shop of course (April 2021). Problem fixed, so I was told. One (1) month later (May), engine light is back on with message “Service Transmission”. Take it back to the shop, was told it was fix…again. Two (2) days later engine light back on, same message. Back to the shop.

Chevy Tahoe Engine Problems

The 2021 Chevy Tahoe comes with three engine options;

  • Diesel
  • 5.3-liter V-8
  • and the more powerful 6.2-liter V-8.

However, many owners have reported engine malfunctions requiring extensive service and repair.  Here is a engine complaint to Edmunds:

2021 Tahoe is a lemon – Leasing a 2021 Tahoe RST and have nothing but problems. Had the car towed into the shop the first go around with half of the engine needing to be rebuilt. All the service lights went off, shaking, rattling and knocking noise and wouldn’t drive.

The engine complaints for the 2021 Chevy Tahoe continue with numerous owners stating that engine lifters are failing. Here is one on NHTSA:

The engine started knocking and running rough. My wife pulled the car over. She could tell from the sound it was not a minor issue… The dealer confirmed it was an engine problem. 8 lifters along with other associated parts need to be replace. This is a major engine repair. The vehicle is 8 months old and has approximately 10,000 miles on it. Doing internet search, the failure of engine lifters in Tahoes and Silverados appears to be a known problem. The service department manager told me that they have already done 10 of these this year. Failure of an engine while driving is a major safety issue. The vehicle is in for repair, now.
