2021 Land Rover Velar Problems Introduction

Got Land Rover Velar Problems, we have the answers.  The 2021 Land Rover Velar is a midsize luxury SUV that sits between the Land Rover Evoque and the Range Rover. The vehicle features a sleek, modern design with a focus on technology and off-road capabilities.

Although the 2021 Land Rover initially appealed to many consumers, it has been plagued by numerous issues and problems with its door handles, electrical system and screen display issues, resulting in many lemon law claims.

2021 Land Rover Velar Problems Summary

  • Door Handle Problems
  • Electrical Problems
  • Screen Display Problem

Door Handle Problems

A key feather of the 2021 Land Rover Velar are its automatic opening and closing door handles. There is an electric motor that retracts and extracts the handles automatically.

There have been numerous reports of Land Rover Velar door handle problems and malfunctions, preventing the doors from operating correctly.

Land Rover dealerships often need to replace the door handle mechanism or motor to resolve this issue. Furthermore, when the handle extracts, it may appear misaligned rather than flush.

The Velar door handle problems are caused by a faulty door handle motor mechanism and can only be fixed by replacing it at a dealership.  The cost of replacing the door handle on the Velar is $332 with $237 for parts and $95 for labor

Here is a complaint on the Range Rover Velar Forum of a door handle falling off.

Door handle cover came off….again!  My passenger door handle cover came off and the dealer replaced it. But now the cover on the drivers handle came off in a car wash. The carwash staff and I searched the carwash tunnel but could not find it. Not sure if it will be found and I expect the dealer won’t want to use warranty again to replace this one too. I think they should pay.  Is it a design flaw if it can’t go though a car wash without the handle coming apart??
The 2 most likely causes for door handle problems in the Land Rover Velar are the following:
  • Lack of Lubrication on the door handle hinge preventing the handles from closing or opening correctly.
  • Snow and Ice Accumulation – There is a weakness in the door handle motor mechanism. Specifically, the electric motor that retracts and extracts the handles is weak. The door handles may become iced inside during the winter freezing temperatures so they don’t fully retract when locking or unlocking the car.

Electrical Problems – Battery Drain and Stuck in Park

Along with door handle problems many Velar owners have complained about electrical problems.  The 2 top Land Rover Velar electrical problems are the following:

Battery Drain

Land Rover Velar owners have reported that when the car is parked overnight, the battery drains and the car does not start the in the morning.  There are several potential causes for battery drain in a Land Rover Velar. Often, the cause is a malfunctioning alternator or a parasitic draw from an unresponsive component.

For example, The Velar ICE (In Control Entertainment) system is the infotainment system used in the Land Rover Velar vehicle. It is a touchscreen-based system that controls various functions such as navigation, audio, climate control, and vehicle settings. When turning off the Velar engine, the Velar ICE system system may not shut down, causing it to drain the battery.

The parasitic draw on the Land Rover Velar battery is not uncommon and According to Motor Hungry:

Battery drain problems is not a problem specific for Velar but for practically all Land Rover vehicles in the past half a decade or more.

Stuck in Park

Another electrical problem is the Velar getting stuck in park. It is quite common to find the Velar stuck in Park when you start the engine for no apparent reason. When the car is stuck in park, the gear selector cannot be used to change gear.

The failure of the Velar to come out of park is due to a faulty brake light switch. A failed brake light switch causes an error in the computer, which locks the car in park because it believes it is unsafe. Replacement of the brake light switch is the only solution.

Screen Display Problems

Velar’s central screen displays are notorious for having problems. Screen problems in the Land Rover Velar can include:

  • Blank or frozen displays
  • Touch sensitivity issues
  • Failure to not tilt back when the car is shut of.
  • The screen is stuck on the rearview camera

Several factors can cause these problems, including software bugs, hardware failures, and screen damage.

Many Velar owners have suggested the Velar display screen problem can sometimes be solved by resetting the system 3 to 4 times. In addition to resetting the Velar system,  shutting off the car and locking it for five minutes or more may fix the display screen problem.

Land Rover is aware the screen display problems and issued a technical service bulletin (TSB) to its dealers.  According to the TSB, Land Rover JLRTB02017NAS2:

SITUATION:
The Interactive Control Display Module (ICDM) of the Land Rover Velar may not be operating as expected
CAUSE:
Software error

Just read this complaint to Edmunds from a Velar owner regarding the problems with the display screen:

There’s no doubt about it that the Velar is a beautiful vehicle; I fell in love with it the first time I laid eyes on it! But the look of the car is nothing compared to the ISSUES under the hood. I’ve had the car now for just over 8 months and have had issue after issue with the displays and electrical system. From early on, I started noticing my displays glitching. Sometimes it would resolve as the car warmed-up; most times I would have to stop my car, turn it off, lock the car and then unlock/restart my car to resolve the issues. This happens on a very regular basis.
