Owners Report Transmission Defects Online

Many 2022 Chevy Silverado owners have reported these transmission problems online.  The following is a 2022 Silverado transmission complaint filed with the NHTSA.

While driving at highway speed and winding the engine up to pass, the entire truck shudders and it feels as if the transmission slips. The vehicle does not accelerate normally and it feels as if the transmission has issues finding the passing gear. After passing and letting off the gas it continues to shudder for a while until you reach a steady speed. Occurs with or without a load. When loaded with weight in bed (such as a load of firewood) and/or towing a trailer the shudder/vibration and slipping feeling are more pronounced when just passengers are in the vehicle. Vehicle has about 3000 miles and the issue is occurring more frequently. started at about 2.5 k miles or so.

The transmission complaints continue with another Chevy Silverado owner reporting to Edmunds:

8 speed tranny terrible!!!!  Started noticing a intermittent vibration/shutter at about 4,000 miles when gently giving it gas. It has about 9,000 miles on it now and does it all the time. Has been to 3 dealers, 1 dealer twice. They magically say there’s nothing wrong with it….Every person that rides in it asks me why it’s doing that. I absolutely hate driving this truck!!!!! Only kept it for 6 months do not but v8 or or any with 8speed tranny!!!

Causes of Silverado Transmission Problems

Chevrolet Silverado transmission problems can be caused by a variety of factors, including:

  • Transmission Control Module (TMC) Malfunction – The transmission control module is responsible for sending signals from sensors in different areas of the vehicle to the transmission. Depending on the driver’s actions with the gears, brakes, or pedals, the TMC then downshifts or upshifts.  A malfunctioning TMC can cause transmission problems in the Silverado.
  • Torque Converter Malfunction – As reported by many Silverado owners, a torque converter failure is another cause of transmission problems. When a torque converter begins to fail it results in transmission fluid leaks which can cause the transmission to fail.

Silverado Transmission Problem TSB

Chevrolet is aware of the problems with the Silverado transmission malfunction and has notified it’s dealers of a upshift problem.  According to Technical Service Bulletin No.: 22-NA-185 “Some (Silverado) customers may comment on a 2-3 upshift slip or flare”.

The Silverado transmission upshift malfunction can occur in the following conditions:

  • During the first 2-3 upshift after the vehicle has been sitting, engine off for several hours. This condition may be caused by air that is trapped in the 3-5-R clutch assembly. When the first 2-3 upshift is made this trapped air is purged and the following 2-3 shifts will be normal with no flare.
  • When transmission ATF temperature is at or below 85 degrees F (30 degrees C).  This 2-3 upshift flare can occur until the ATF temperature warms.
