Consumers Calling on Mitsubishi to Recall The 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander Hood Shaking

Owners of 2022 Mitsubishi Outlanders, have reported a dangerous condition with their front hoods. Numerous complaints from Outlander owners state that the hoods of some SUVs can open at any time, especially when driving on highways and hitting bumps which cause the hoods to bounce.

One owner states in Edmunds “Yesterday we picked up our stylish new 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander ES at a dealership 180 miles from our home. It was a windy day and our almost three hour drive home became a hair-raising experience. When we left the dealership and got on the highway the front hood of the vehicle began lifting and flexing with the wind. My husband thought it wasn’t properly latched and stopped to remedy the situation but he found it was properly closed. We drove the entire trip home watching the hood violently undulate. (I kept thinking the hood was going to snap off)…. I will now be wary about driving it on windy days (which would be almost every day here in Northern Arizona). Since Mitsubishi Motors took four years to come out with this totally redesigned model I don’t understand how something like this could slip through their fingers. Don’t they test in wind tunnels?”

Another owner reports on NHTSA, “I purchased 2022 Outlander in September of 2021. The hood on the vehicle at any speed looks as though it is going to fly up but gets much worse at higher speeds and on the highway. It actually looks like it is going to break loose and fly up and hit the wind shield. It is scary to drive at times thinking this will happen.”

2022 Mitsubishi Outlander Hood Shaking Class Action Lawsuit

In response to numerous complaints concerning hood shaking and fluttering, a class action lawsuit was filed in the federal court of Massachusetts (The Mitsubishi Outlander Hood Defect Class Action Lawsuit is Rezendes v. Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc., Case No. 1:22-cv-10211, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts).

The 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander Hood shaking class action lawsuit alleges Mitsubishi knowingly sold 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander vehicles containing defective hoods that flutter and bounce while the car is driving.

According to the lawsuit, Mitsubishi became aware of the manufacturing defect “almost immediately” after it began selling 2022 Mitsubishi Outlanders, but failed to inform owners.  As a result of numerous hood shaking complaints by Outlander owners, a high number of warranty repair requests submitted by dealers, and pre-production testing and analysis, Mitsubishi discovered the problem immediately after it began selling the vehicles.

By March 2021 Mitsubishi began issuing bulletins to its dealerships acknowledging that the Class Vehicles suffer from the Hood Defect and proposing (inadequate) repair attempts.

Hood Shaking Bulletins

In March 2021, Mitsubishi issued technical service bulletin TSB-21-42A-001 for all 2022 Outlander SUVs due to hood shaking.

According to Mitsubishi, hood shaking is caused by an improper hood latch and bumper height alignment, and if such a condition is experienced, the dealer should diagnose the problem, and repair it according to the bulletin

Then in April 2021, Mitsubishi issued a document titled, 2022 Outlander Hood Shaking Adjustment Special Customer Satisfaction Campaign.

  • “Please use the following procedure on all 2022 Outlander vehicles  – currently in your inventory and those that will be arriving at your dealership in April – to install countermeasure weather-strips to resolve a hood flutter centered around air intrusion to the engine compartment. This procedure is in addition to TSB-21-42A-001 and will ensure that the wind intrusion is minimized.” — 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander hood flutter campaign.”
Mitsubishi has since issue 2 more bulletins, TSB-21-42A-001REV2 and TSB-21-42A-005, for 2022 Outlanders built prior to May 12, 2021 which suffer from hood shakings.
