2022 Toyota Tundra Rear Axel Recall

2022 Toyota Tundra

The 2022 Tundra is Toyota’s first redesigned pickup truck in fourteen years. With its advanced features such as an infotainment screen that measures 14.0-inches wide and a i-FORCE Twin-Turbo V6 Engine, the 2022 Toyota Tundra is very popular among consumers. The auto manufacturer claims its 2022 Toyota Tundra is “Engineered for Adventure“. Despite this claim, Tundra owners are discovering their trucks are inoperable due to a recall for the rear axel assembly.

New Toyota Tundra Rear Axle Design

There is a new rear-axle design on the 2022 Toyota Tundra, along with a coil-sprung rear suspension with multi-links. Older Tundra trucks had leaf springs. The new 2022 Toyota Tundra uses the same TNGA-F chassis as the all-new 2022 Lexus LX600 and the all-new 2023 Toyota Sequoia.  Despite the new design, Toyota became aware of a axel problem.

Toyota Became Aware of The Rear Axle Problems

Consumer Reports reported that Toyota became aware of the 2022 Toyota Tundra Axel Problems in March 2022:

According to documents provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Toyota became aware of two vehicles that had missing nuts and separation of the rear axle assembly in March 2022.  Toyota investigated and found that the different components in the rear axle assembly were within the proper design specification and properly tightened when the vehicles were built. But it was determined that the nuts would loosen because the initial torque used to tighten the nuts was too low.

Toyota Recalls Tundra for Rear Axle Defect

Toyota is recalling 46,176 of its 2022 Tundras. According to SAFETY RECALL 22TA05  the rear axle fasteners and nuts may loosen, increasing the risk of an accident or crash.

The problem: Vehicles in this recall have certain nuts on the rear axle assembly that can loosen over time and, in some cases, fall off, potentially causing an axle shaft sub-assembly to separate from the axle. If complete separation occurs, this can affect vehicle stability and brake performance, increasing the risk of a crash.

The Repair: Toyota dealers will inspect and retighten the axle flange nuts FREE OF CHARGE. In some cases, axle related components may be replaced FREE OF CHARGE based on inspection results.

Owners Complain about 2022 Toyota Tundra Rear Axel

Many 2022 Toyota Tundra owners have reported problems with the rear axel assembly recall.  Just read this complaint by a Tundra owner to Car and Driver

It was a poor decision by Toyota to use the lug bolts instead of lug nuts (which is used on almost all American and other Toyotas). They probably would not have this recall if they had not switch to lug bolts which really have little if any benefit to consumers (other than Toyota as it is cheaper for the Toyota to use lug bolts).
