2023 XC40 Brake Problem Complaints

Braking problems are a dangerous condition that can lead to an accident. The Volvo XC40 has a history of braking problems especially with the collision avoidance system and “phantom braking”.

Just read this brake complaint by a Volvo 2023 XC40 owner to Edmunds:

Love the look and feel of this little SUV but after driving it 4 months it’s collision avoidance system keeps going off FOR NO REASON. I have turned off all of what I call the “nanny” safety features off the minute I bought it so how is this feature even going off at all. I can be out on a country road, no lines even on the road and it hits the brakes and yanks me left into oncoming traffic, it has happened on the freeway going 65 miles an hours and also during city driving, I have had it to service several times and they are clueless. Someone in Sweden was supposed to have gotten back with us within 30 days, it’s been 45 days now and I guess no one cares. Also at 5 months old it had an airbag replaced already and now the side panel falls down constantly so it needd to go back to have that fixed.

2023 XC40 Volvo Brake Recall

  • 2023 Volvo S90
  • 2023 Volvo V90
  • 2023 Volvo V90 Cross Country
  • 2023 Volvo XC90

The NHTSA announced that Volvo will fix a braking error across its 2023 model lineup with an over-the-air software update.

2023 Volvo XC40 Electrical System Problems

The complaints continue with owners of the 2023 Volvo XC40 with electrical problems.   One owner reports to Edmunds about his radio problems:

I have only owned this brand new Volvo xc40 2023 for three months and it has been in the shop for 29 days and counting. The IHU (radio) has been replaced. That replacement has been “fixed” once and it is now in the shop with the same issue- the IHU shuts down and this time with a warning not to drive the vehicle. The IHU is the hub that controls everything from the climate control to the phone to the radio and navigation. It’s a big deal when it fails. There are other issues as well. The car shuts off if you open the door while it’s in park, the driver’s seat sometimes moves on its own and twice after turning off the ignition, I got a warning upon opening the door that the engine was still running (it was not). You might say I have a lemon (and I’m sure I do), but I’m also not confident that other Volvos won’t have similar problems. I would steer clear of a 2022 xc40.

Here is another electrical 2023 Volvo XC40 complaint on Reddit

I purchased a new 2023 XC40 B5 AWD in late August. ~2,000 miles and just a few months later and I already have to take it to the service department. Two issues came up in the last few weeks: while running errands, the interactive media screen effectively stopped working, along with the functions that it controls–i.e., no GPS, no heating/cooling, no media
