Chevy Equinox is a popular SUV for car shoppers. In 2020, the Chevy SUV sold nearly 271,000 units despite the Covid-19 pandemic.

However, this does not mean that the Equinox is without issue. In fact, there are several issues that are plaguing Equinox owners.

The good news is that your Equinox issues may qualify for relief via the state’s lemon laws. You may be entitled to a refund or a vehicle replacement.

Read on to learn about common Chevy Equinox problems. Explore major issues including oil consumption and piston rings wearing out prematurely.

1. Oil Consumption and Worn Out Pistons

One well-documented issue is with the Chevy Equinox consuming an excessive volume of oil. This issue is caused by a redesign of the pistons’ oil control rings.

Chevy opted for a thinner design to resolve another issue. Instead, they created a new problem and the oil control rings breakdown a lot earlier than anticipated.

What happens next is gaps form in the oil control ring. This allows oil to escape the cylinder walls and leak into the combustion chamber. The excess oil then burns up in the combustion chamber.

Unfortunately, the Equinox engine design allows for additional oil loss. Engineers designed oil cooling jets to improve engine reliability and service life. This improved performance was achieved by lowering piston jets with a pressurized oil spray system.

This sounds like a good feature but the spray jets are diverting more oil to the cylinders. By doing so, more burden is placed on the thinner oil control rings. Ultimately, more oil is leaking into the combustion chamber.

Excessive oil consumption is further exacerbated by the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) system. Chevy engines are inadvertently taking oil off the valve trains into the intake system.

2. Tire Tread Separation

The Chevy Equinox is having issues with its tires. Tire tread separation may not seem like a major issue, however, it can cause you to lose control of the vehicle.

If you suffer a major accident while losing control, the tires may be to blame. Drivers are reporting hearing a vibration noise or observing a bulge in the tire.

These signs typically indicate that a tire failure is imminent. Check your vehicle’s warranty to see if a tire replacement is available.

3. Reduced Engine Power

Has your Chevy Equinox ever gone into limp mode? This occurs when the vehicle’s computer detects reduced engine power. A warning then occurs on the vehicle’s display about the engine problems.

The throttle body may require servicing. This maintenance task often corrects the issue, however, there are several other potential failures that may force the vehicle into limp mode. If the manufacturer’s service technicians cannot figure it out after multiple attempts, there may be a Lemon Law case on your hands.

Common Chevy Equinox Problems

No one wants to have an issue with their new vehicle. The unfortunate reality it is not uncommon for new vehicles to experience crippling issues. The last thing you want is a tire tread separation issue on the highway or see your vehicle go into limp mode.
