Audi e-tron Problems

The Audi e-tron has become a popular electric SUV that has earned great reviews from critics and consumers. Despite its popularity, owners have experienced problems resulting in repairs and trips to the dealership.

Audi e-tron Problems Summary

Here are some common problems and complaints that have been reported with the Audi e-tron:

  • Software Problems – infotainment system freezing or crashing
  • Brake Problems – fading regenerative braking
  • Battery Problems – moisture entering the battery

Software Problems

The Audi e-tron has been associated with several software-related problems, including freezing or crashing of the infotainment system and navigation issues. Many Audi e-tron owners have reported the screen freezing problems online.

Here is a complaint on Audi World:

This morning, I had a total MMI freeze.
– no sound whatsoever (radio, MP3, …)
– no navigation (stayed “stuck” on point of origin)
– no climate controls
– no bluetooth connection
– no traffic sign recognition
Left the car for about 5 minutes (shut down and closed), didn’t help.

Audi has issued a technical service bulletin (TSB 93N6) on April 26, 2022 for the software of the battery system modules. According to the Audi e-tron battery software TSB:

A software update is necessary on Audi e-tron vehicles…The battery system of an electric vehicle consists of a large number of individual battery cells. These cells have the same capacity and slightly different cell voltages. Without a balancing function, the capacity of the entire system would align itself with the capacity of the weakest cell. In addition, individual cells could be overloaded and age more rapidly…. This software update optimizes the function of the control unit with respect to balancing and stabilizes the cell voltage measurement.

Brake Problems

Regenerative brakes are used for the e-tron. The regenerative braking system is a technology that allows the vehicle to recover energy from the braking process and use it to recharge the vehicle’s battery.  As the driver applies the brakes, the system converts the kinetic energy of the vehicle into electrical energy, which is stored in the battery for later use.

There have been reports of problems with the Audi regenerative brake system. Just read this e-tron brake complaint on the etron forum:

I have 2 years and 14,000 miles on my 2019 e-Tron. Recently the regenerative braking has been failing the first 4 or 5 brake uses on the day. After that, regen braking works fine until the next day. What happens is when I apply the brakes, regen braking momentarily is applied then it fades to manual braking. Pump the brakes and the cycle repeats. After 4 or 5 tries, regen works fine.  If this is a software issue, resetting the unit that controls regen braking might fix it. I have a VCDS unit so I can look at modules for error codes but I can’t figure out which module to look at. I have not given the problem to the Audi dealer yet.

Audi is aware of the regenerative brake problems and has issued a recall in 2021.  According to Car Scoops:

A total of 38 2021 Audi e-tron quattro and e-tron Sportback quattro SUVs are being recalled because of mismanufactured parts within the brake booster.  Audi reports that wafers for the flexray transceiver, a part within the electromechanical brake booster, were not properly cleaned by its supplier. As a result, they could corrode, leading to short-circuits or interruptions within the component.

Battery problems

The Audi e-tron has experienced a number of issues related to the battery and electrical systems, including problems with moisture entering the battery compartment. Moisture can cause damage to the electrical components and pose safety risks for drivers.

According to the online forum Electrek, Audi issued a recall in 2019 due to the potential for moisture to enter the high-voltage battery compartment through a wiring harness, which could cause electrical system malfunctions.

Faulty seal on the wiring harness between the battery pack and the charge connector

As part of the  recall, Audi offered free repairs to affected customers, including the replacement or repair of electrical system components and the sealing of the affected areas. This was intended to prevent future electrical errors and keep drivers safe on the road.

The Safety Recall 93E8 / HV Battery Recall for the 2019 Audi e-tron is related to potential electrical system malfunctions caused by moisture.
