Engine Problems

The engine is the heart of your Chevy Silverado. Unfortunately, this particular engine has a tendency to malfunction.

In 2021 the Silverado offered six engines. A 2.7-liter LB3 turbocharged four-cylinder engine, a three-liter turbodiesel Duramax engine, and four naturally aspirated engines. These included the 4.3-liter LV3 V6 engine, the 5.3-liter L82 V8, the 5.3-liter L84 V8, and the naturally aspirated 6.2-liter L87 V8 gas engine..

While idling, many drivers report the engine runs very “rough”.   In addition, Forums, YouTube, and message boards are swamped with buyers reporting crank start issues with the Duramax Silverado engine.

Issues reports include complaints around long crank start and no-start.  The problem may be due to defective piston rings, faulty sensors, or carbon buildup on your throttle body.

Are you wondering if other vehicles are suffering the same challenges as the Chevrolet Silverado? Well, it appears that the Silverado, Escalade, Yukon, Sierra, Suburban, and Tahoe are all susceptible to this issue. Looking at the list, that is almost any light-duty truck or SUV GM has produced in the last three years.

As of January 2022, GM has not recalled any vehicle for the reported engine problem.

Electrical Problems

Owners of the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado have been experiencing electrical problems with the infotainment screen, radio, backup camera, and other components.

According to one National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) complaint:

“My back up camera developed a fish eye distortion. – It makes it hard to see how close something is behind you, making it dangerous backing up with children in the area”

Another Silverado owner reported

“The radio continuously keeps blacking out turning off and back on over and over. Radio has been replaced and everything and it’s still an issue.”

The electrical problems are not confined to the enjoyment of the Silverado.  GM reports the electrical problems in the Silverado are so dangerous, they could cause an accident.

According to a recall by GM, filed under  NHTSA campaign number 19V888000, there may be a possible defect in the positive cable of the battery of the Silverado that could cause intermittent electrical connections. If this occurs, the truck could stall causing an accident. In addition, a fire could also result from electrical arcing.

Brake Problems

When you’re driving a Chevy Silverado the engine and electrical problems, are not  the only thing you need to worry about. You also need to beware of serious brake problems.

Once again, this 2020 Chevy Silverado fails to perform and even though the tagline on the Silverado claims it’s “the strongest, most advanced Silverado ever,” we can’t agree.

More, and more brake complaints have been reported on NHTSA, with one owner stating:

“Brake system failure on 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. Multiple dash warnings notifying of brake failure, esc failure, and service brake system warning”.

As usual, there is a recall from the Silverado brake problem.

More than 20,000 trucks and cars are being recalled for brake problems by GM.  According to NHTSA campaign number 20V116000, GM is recalling certain 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles. The bolts used to attach the front and/or rear brake calipers may have not been heat-treated and may break under load

A full-size pickup truck is built to transport heavy loads. Evidently, heavy-duty loads weren’t taken into consideration by Chevrolet with its defective brakes, since the brakes could fail under load.
