Since 1959, Nissan has been selling trucks in the United States. In 2004 Nissan introduced the Nissan Titan.

With its eight-foot bed, luxury interior components, and off-road rig option, the Nissan Titan is a popular buy. In 2021 alone, Titan sales exceeded 27,000 units.

Adding to the appeal of the Nissan Titan, is Nissan’s standard RE5R05A transmission, offering fuel economy and towing capabilities of up to 9,500 pounds.

Despite the Nissan Titan’s popularity, there are numerous reports of transmission problems with this truck.

In this article, we unveil details around consumer-reported issues with the Nissan Titan. Armed with this information, you can make a conscious, informed, decision whether to purchase the Titan or not.

Nissan Titan Transmission Problems & Complaints

Among the consumer complaints filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) are the concerns with the transmission problems in the 2021 Titan.

Specifically, owners complain the Titan jerks forward and/or shudders a great deal when coming to a stop. The harsh downshifting is a substantial impairment of safety and a hazard.

Nissan Titan owners share their transmission complaints on the NHTSA site.

An owner in Bath, Pennsylvania reports:

“Vehicle shifts very rough. When the transmission downshifts to stop it will bump or lurch forward. If you are not expecting it the truck will go forward. There is a lot of lag while accelerating. Dealer looked over vehicle and worked with Nissan to check several things. The dealer techs all noticed the problem.

Another owner from Texas says:

“2021 Nissan Titan is having major transmission problems jerking when down shifting. This has become a serious issue when try to maintain speed. I have taking the vehicle to the dealership to which I am told, “Nissan is fully aware of the issue and is working on a fix”. This has been on going for close to a year.”

Despite the numerous complaints, as of February 2022, Nissan has not issued a technical service bulletin or recall for the transmission issue.

Titan Transmission Problem Causes

Our investigation into the common transmission problems with the Nissan Titan revealed a key insight. A radiator design flaw is the root of the Titan transmission failures, thus resulting in early transmission failure and overheating.   Let’s differentiate between transmission failure and overheating concerns.

According to  Street Smart Transmissions:

    • Early Transmission Failure

The Nissan RE5R05A transmission pumps ATF forward to the radiator, where a special chamber allows it to release the heat that it’s absorbed from all of the moving parts. Unfortunately, that cooling passage has a tendency to crack, allowing antifreeze to mix with the transmission fluid. This chemical contamination then wreaks havoc on everything from the transmission seals, to the clutches

    • Overheating

As your transmission moves, friction creates heat. ATF absorbs heat and then expels it through the radiator. Excess heat can severely damage the clutches, transmission bands, seals, and a host of other parts.  When internal transmission parts are damaged, the shifting becomes erratic and can cause the Nissan Titan to hesitation when switching between gears
