cam phaser problemsWhat is the Ford Cam Phaser

A cam phaser is a device that adjusts the valve timing in a vehicle, also known as a variable valve timing actuator (VVT).  A cam phaser regulates the timing and duration of valve opening and closing in a vehicle engine. They optimize performance and fuel efficiency by being part of the valvetrain system. Nevertheless, Ford cam phasers have experienced a number of problems.

Causes and Problems with Ford Cam Phasers

Among the most common issues with cam phasers are noise, sticking, low oil pressure, and overheating.   Here are the common Ford Cam Phaser Problems:

Cam Phaser Noise

Noise Cam phasers can be noisy, which is one of their most common problems. The engine may make a ticking or clicking noise from the front. In most cases, this noise is caused by a lack of lubrication or a buildup of debris in the cam phaser. Usually, this is caused by faulty oil control solenoids, which regulate the flow of oil to the cam phasers. Cleaning the cam phasers or replacing the oil control solenoid can fix the noise.

Stuck Cam Phaser

Another problem with cam phasers is that they can get stuck. When the internal parts of the cam phaser become worn or damaged, such as the sprockets and gears, this can happen. A stuck cam phaser can cause engine problems or stalling. The stuck cam phaser can be replaced or the entire valvetrain can be replaced to resolve this issue.

Camshaft position sensor failure

Another issue is due to camshaft position sensor failure. This sensor is responsible for sending information about the camshaft position to the engine control module. In the case of a failed sensor, the engine may have trouble starting and may run poorly, which may be caused by dust accumulation and debris build-up. Cleaning or replacing the sensor is a common solution.

Low oil pressure

Low oil pressure can also damage cam phasers. It can happen when the engine’s oil pump is not functioning properly or when there is not enough oil in the engine. When the cam phasers are not properly lubricated, they can become damaged and worn. As a consequence, the engine will perform poorly, fuel consumption will increase, and emissions will increase. In order to fix this problem, it is necessary to replace the oil pump or to add more oil to the engine.

Overheating

The cam phaser can also be damaged by overheating. At high engine temperatures, the metal parts of the cam phaser can become distorted or warped. The cam phaser can bind or seize up as a result, resulting in poor engine performance and increased emissions. Repairing the engine cooling system or replacing the cam phaser can resolve this issue.

Ford TSB Cam Phaser Problem and Warranty Extension – Cam Phaser

Ford is aware of the Cam Phaser problems and has issued a technical several bulletin to address the complaints and provide warranty repairs.

According the Ford Cam Phaser Technical Service Bulletin Program 21N03 (TSB):

“In some of the affected vehicles, an undesirable noise may develop from the cam phasers in the 3.5L GTDI engine. This noise might occur as a rattle when starting the engine after the vehicle was turned off for an extended period of time or as a knocking noise when the engine is idling after it is warmed up”

In addition, the Ford Cam Phaser TSB has established a program which extends the warranty coverage of the engine cam phasers until January 1, 2023.

If you suspect that your Ford vehicle may be experiencing problems with its cam phasers, it is important to have it checked by your authorized Ford dealer as soon as possible. They will be able to diagnose the problem and recommend the best course of action, whether that’s a repair, replacement, or further investigation.
