GM Engine Lemon Law Class Action Verdict

In the GM Lemon Law Engine Class Action Lawsuit, (Raul Siqueiros et al. v. General Motors LLC, case number 3:16-cv-07244) a jury in California found that General Motors violated state laws by selling SUV’s and trucks with defective engines.

In a rare lemon law class action verdict, the jury awarded damages in excess of $100 million dollars to 38,000 consumers in California, North Carolina and Idaho.  Each of the 38,000 consumers were awarded $2,700 for breach of warranty and violation of the Consumer Protection Acts.

The GM SUV’s and trucks, model years 2011 to 2014, involved in the class action lemon law engine suit were the following:

  • 2011-2014 GM Silverado,
  • 2011-2014 Suburban, Tahoe;

Piston Ring Flaws Cause Oil-Guzzling and Engine Failure

The Plaintiffs claimed the SUV and Truck vehicles experienced early engine failures due to a build up of carbon on the piston and rings inside the defective engines and oil consumption.

Accordingly the Plaintiffs claimed GM attempted to fix the carbon buildup by having the GM dealers apply a chemical cleaning agent.  The chemical cleaning agent was applied to the inside of the engines to remove carbon buildup on the piston and rings.

However the chemical cleaning process was ineffective in removing the carbon buildup on the pistons and rings.  As a result of the carbon buildup, the pistons and rings failed resulting in a premature engine breakdown.

More Engine Lemon Law Class Action Lawsuits Filed Against GM

GM is facing another lemon law engine class action lawsuit.  A Michigan class-action was filed against General Motors (GM) in August of 2021. The allegations relate to problems with the engine valve lifter on Buick, Corvette, Chevrolet, as well as GMC Small Block V8 vehicles.

The Lemon Law engine class action lawsuit against GM alleges that the active fuel management lifters, dynamic management lifters, and valve train systems in these vehicles malfunction, causing the lifters to prematurely fail.
