The Honda CRV is a very popular SUV for car shoppers. In 2021, the Honda CRV sold 361,271 units even with the COVID pandemic.

Even with the high number of sales, the CRV is not free from defects.  In fact, the Honda CRV has a problem with its climate control system. CRV owners have reported their AC not working or the heater not working properly.

Regardless of the defects, your Honda CRV may qualify you for relief under the lemon law.  The Honda CRV climate control issue may entitle you to a repurchase or a substantial cash settlement, and you can keep the car.

What Are the CRV Climate Control Problems?

The CRV climate control problems are related to the air conditioning or heating not working at normal levels.  For example, the system doesn’t cool or heat the car to a set temperature. Another example of the climate control problem is the air conditioning or heating system produces a bad odor.

While it is normal to have some variation of temperature in your Honda CRV, if your climate control is not cooling or heating your car the same as it did in the past, you may have a climate control defect. The CRV climate control defect may qualify you for relief under the lemon law.

The Honda CR-V AC and Heater problems affect the following models:

What Are The 5 Signs Of The Honda CRV AC Problems?

    1. Leaks

The most common problem with the Honda CRV climate control is due to a leak or leaks in the AC compressor or condenser, resulting in a loss of the coolant. (The coolant is required to cool the air that is in the Honda CRV AC climate control system.)

If the coolant is leaking, the climate control system will not work properly and will not blow cold air.  If the leak is severe, it can damage the entire climate control system.

    1. Noises

If you hear unusual noises when starting the air conditioning system, it may be a sign that the Honda CRV air conditioner compressor is defective.

The compressor for the Honda CRV air conditioner has bearings in it which allow the unit to produce cold air.  If the compressor bearings are worn the coolant will not flow as well, which can cause leaks.

The noise produced is a symptom that the bearings or other internal parts in the compressor are damaged.

    1. No cold air, only hot air

When the Honda CRV air conditioning compressor is defective it will not permit the normal flow of the coolant, resulting in a lack of cold air.  Consequently, the air coming out of the passenger compartment vents will be warm despite the setting set to ‘cold’ on the thermostat.

    1. Compressor clutch wearing out

Honda has alerted consumers of a problem with the compressor clutch wearing out resulting in a defective climate control system.  The wearing of the compressor clutch is the most common cause of the Honda CRV AC problems.

    1. Dirt in the Condenser

If the Honda CRV condenser is blocked or dirty it will result in the failure of the air conditioning system.

In order to prevent this condition, you must clean out the water tank condenser and clear the orifice tube before turning on the AC in the spring or summer.   The failure of the Honda CRV condenser is a common cause of the failure of the air conditioner.

What To Do If Your Honda CRV Air Conditioning Is Not Working

If you are experiencing a malfunctioning air conditioning system with your Honda CRV,  you may be required to have the entire air conditioning system replaced; costing thousands of dollars.

Honda has issued a technical service bulletin TSB for the CRV air condition problems.  So, if you are experiencing warm air coming out of your Honda CR-V AC, it is important you service your car at the dealer.
