Honda Lane Departure Warning Problems – Know the Facts

Honda Lane Departure Warning Problems

Honda Lane Departure Warning Introduction

The Honda Lane Departure Warning feature immediately alerts the driver of an unintended lane change, allowing the driver to correct the mistake and stay in the appropriate lane.

Many Honda owners have reported problems with the Lane Departure Warning resulting in numerous complaints and repairs. What should you do next? Find out more about Honda Lane Departure Warning problems.

What is the Honda Lane Departure Warning

The Honda Lane Departure Warning (LDW) is a safety feature included with Honda Sensing Package and uses advanced camera technology to detect when a Honda vehicle drifts out of its designated lane.

When a driver drifts out of a lane without using a turn signal, the Lane Departure Warning will alert the driver with an icon in the instrument panel and an audible warning to take immediate action and correct the lane departure mistake.

By using the Lane Departure Warning, Honda drivers can improve their awareness of the road, and avoid accidents caused by unintentional lane changes. The Lane Departure Warning in Honda vehicles is especially helpful in keeping the car in its lane during long drives or in poor driving conditions.

Honda Lane Departure Warning Defects

Many Honda owners have reported problems with their lane departure warning system, also known as Honda Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS).

Problems with the  Lane Departure Warning can lead to deadly accidents.  According to a report by NHTSA, There were more than 1.9 million single-vehicle crashes in the United States in 2018. Of those, 57% were related to road departures, out of which, there were 339,000 injuries and nearly 12,000 fatalities.

At least 29 Lane Departure Warning complaints have been reported on Carproblemzoo.   Here is a Lane Departure Warning complaint by a 2022 Honda owner:

30+ mph steering becomes sticky / notchy that requires over-correction to fix, making it uncomfortable and dangerous to drive, particularly on the interstate. When using lane keep assist, it pulls to one side or the other, crossing the line, and then autocorrects when the lane departure warning is activated, only to repeat this process consistently. There are no error codes on the car and local dealerships have not yet heard of a solution. There are currently no recalls or official statements from Honda regarding this issue.

The reports about defective Honda Lane Departure Warning system continues with a 2021 Honda Passport owner from Maryland stating the following on NHTSA:

I’VE HAD MY 2021 PASSPORT AWD FOR ONLY A WEEK AND HAVE NOTICED IT PULLS NOTICEABLY TO THE RIGHT. THIS EVEN HAPPENS WHEN ” THE LANE KEEP ASSIST” IS SWITCHED OFF. IT IS A CONSTANT STRUGGLE TO KEEP IT FROM DRIFTING INTO THE RIGHT LANE AND OTHER CARS. THIS HAPPENS ON ALL TYPES OF ROADS BUT IS MOST NOTICEABLE OF HIGHWAYS. THE PULL IS SO STRONG THAT IT MAKES THE LANE KEEP ASSIST SYSTEM (LKAS) UNUSABLE.

Why the Honda Lane Departure Warning is Not Working

Here are the top 3 reasons why the Honda Lane Departure Warning may not be working properly

1. Radar Sensors are Obstructed or Blocked

The Honda Lane Departure Warning system combines two types of sensors: a radar sensor and a camera positioned behind the rearview mirror. Debris from the roadway or inclement weather, such as snow or rain may block these sensors. By cleaning your car, you can ensure the Honda Lane Departure Warning system performs properly.

2. Severe Weather and Road Conditions

Sensors can be obstructed by rain, snow, fog, or extreme heat. Honda Lane Departure Warning cannot be used if a lane or vehicle ahead cannot be detected. Furthermore, winding roads may make it difficult for the sensors to detect a lane.

3. Speed of Travel

Honda Lane Departure Warning only works when you travel at a certain speed.  The speed necessary is 40MPH-90MPH.
