We’ve discussed on our lemon law blog how Cadillac is considered a dying brand in the United States. Looking at Cadillac’s current car ratings, it’s really not a surprise.

The Cadillac XT6 is a luxury car loaded with top-of-the-line electrical components. For a car of this caliber, you would expect the electrical system to work flawlessly. However, this is not the case with the 2020 XT6.

J.D. Power has given the XT6 a predicted reliability score of 78 out of 100, which is only an average rating.

The full list of the 2020 Cadillac XT6’s problems is extensive. Commonly reported problems include defects with the electrical system, build design, and braking system.

Keep in mind, if you are experiencing these issues you may have bought a lemon. Don’t worry! We’re here to help you figure this out with help from the PA Lemon Law and NJ Lemon Law.

Let’s take a quick look at the common 2020 Cadillac XT6 lemon law problems you need to watch out for.

1. Electrical System – Fuel Gauge & Backup Camera

Imagine driving along when your fuel gauge suddenly stops working. This happened to a driver of a 2020 Cadillac XT6.

In Edmunds an owner writes

2020 Cadillac xt6 with all options and new vehicle with less than 400 miles, fuel gauge indicator hash marks that show the level of fuel on the fuel gauge intermittently stop working upon engine startup. Dealer has already checked computer codes and found no error codes. Dealer states they have reset computers several times to correct this issue. Dangerous driving without knowing how much fuel is really in the fuel tank.”

Another owner complains about problems with the XT6 backup camera:

“All cameras stopped working. When car is put into reverse the screen goes black with a red triangle (warning) and a red camera with a circle and slash through it (no camera)”

Cadillac has acknowledged electrical problems with the XT6 and issued a Service Bulletin PIC6420A specifically for the backup camera. Cadillac states:

“Customers may comment that when in reverse the radio screen is black with a red triangle and a red camera with a circle and slash through it.”

2. Braking System Problems

Cadillac prides itself with an advanced braking system on the XT6, providing owners with the best in safety while on the road.

The advanced braking system, known as Intelligent Braking Assist, detects panic-braking situations and automatically adds brake pressure to assist a braking driver in slowing the vehicle down more quickly.

By using radar and vision sensors, the driver can avoid or mitigate front-end collision damage.

Unfortunately, the Intelligent Braking System on the XT6 does not provide the safety that a Cadillac XT6 owner would expect.

This complaint was left on the NHTSA website:

“The Cadillac…has a flaw in the intelligent braking assist(IBA) software. When no collision is imminent, pushing the brake even slightly results in extremely hard over braking causing all items to fly forward. There is no way to turn off IBA without disabling the entire Automatic Emergency Braking System.

As a result of braking problems with the XT6, Cadillac has issued Service Bulletin #N202301990. The Cadillac XT6 Service Bulletin describes problems with the enhanced automatic emergency braking.

“Certain 2020 model year Cadillac XT6 vehicles, equipped with enhanced automatic emergency braking, (RPO UGN), may have a condition where the automatic and/or enhanced cruise control may not engage. If it does engage, it will disengage normally if the brake is applied.”

3. Poor Quality with Build

The Cadillac XT6 is marketed as a luxury SUV, which means that you’d expect a high level of finish on the vehicle’s interior. Unfortunately, for many owners, their interior reality is a far cry from expectations.

An owner describes their disappointment on Edmunds:

I purchased a 2021 Cadillac XT6 for nearly $60,000….We’ve had nothing but problems with it. Brakes hung up two weeks ago (screeching like an off-the-rails train) and had those replaced. I’ve had it back for 1 week and 1 day….today the air conditioning quit, the check engine light came on, I’m getting an error message on the screen about a problem with the steering assist, the fan runs loudly for 10 minutes after you shut the car off (has done it now twice). Less than 20,000 miles on it. I’ve driven Suburbans for the previous 15 years (my last one had ~210,000 miles on it) and never had an issue. Again, do NOT ever buy a Cadillac!

Read on from another Cadillac XT6 owner on Cars.com about the poor quality of the XT6:

“Although the Cadillac XT6 has its strengths, as a loyal GM customer for decades, I must regretfully admit that it still falls short in nearly every measure when compared to most other Mid-size Luxury SUVs in the same class. It is disappointing that the XT6 was conceived which such limited time and resources.”

Consumer Reports also found quality problems with the Cadillac XT6 and stated:

“The XT6 lacks some features that buyers might expect in a luxury SUV, and it has disappointing fuel economy. Cadillac’s poor brand reliability also hurts the vehicle’s Overall Score. We found it to be a pleasant companion for commuting and road trips.”

Even Cadillac has acknowledged the problems with the quality of the XT6. They issued a Service Bulletin specifically about underbody rust corrosion and aluminum oxidation problems on certain exterior panels.

The bulletin states:

“ Cast aluminum alloy components may appear to have a grey or white coating on the surface commonly known as surface oxidation. Uncoated aluminum alloys begin to oxidize as soon as it is exposed to the atmosphere.”

But Wait There’s More & What You Can Do About It
