Cadillac CT6 Problems

In the past we have reported in our lemon law blog that Cadillac is considered a dying brand in the United States. When you look at the Cadillac CT6 current car ratings, it doesn’t come as a surprise.

According to Cadillac Problems, a prominent Cadillac online forum, Cadillac CT6 owners have made numerous complaints over 5 model years, ranking the Cadillac CT6 10th in overall reliability out of 22 Cadillac models.

There have been many complaints about the Cadillac CT6, including problems with the brakes and transmission.

Problems with the Brakes

The brakes in the CT6 are one of the most critical parts of a car. The Cadillac CT6 brake system struggles to operate correctly placing its owners and drivers in danger of an accident.

Many CT6 owners have complained about brake problems online.  One owner states on NHTSA “The contact owns a 2019 Cadillac CT6. While driving, the brake system failed to engage. The vehicle was taken to an unknown dealer where it was diagnosed that the brake booster failed and needed to be replaced. The failure mileage was 1,800.”

Another CT6 owner reports on Car Complaints “The contact owns a 2020 Cadillac CT6. The contact stated that while depressing the brake pedal, there was a loud screeching sound coming from the wheels….The CT6 owner was informed that the front radial arms were faulty and needed to be replaced. The radial arms were replaced however, the failure persisted. The CT6 owner indicated that there was a black greasy material coming from the brakes and covered the wheels. The cause of the failure was determined it was the brake shields. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 100.”

Cadillac CT6 Brake Recall

The brake problems with the Cadillac CT6 have been brought to the attention of GM and it has issued a brake recall.

According to the NHTSA campaign number 19V889000, GM is recalling Cadillac CT6 vehicles due to software errors in the Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM).

The brake defect, caused by a software error, causes the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and Antilock Braking System (ABS) to malfunction and become disabled.  Due to the Cadillac CT6 brake problem, drivers are at higher risk of accidents.  The Cadillac CT6 brake recall began February 4, 2020, and owners are instructed to contact their dealership or GM for repair.

Problems with the Transmission

Problems with Cadillac CT6 are not just limited to brakes.  Many owners are reporting transmission problems also.  CT6 owners have experienced the following transmission problems.

  • transmission delays
  • grinding or jumping when accelerating
  • car shaking on the road
  • burning odor

Here is an example of a transmission problem on Car Complaints “The 8L transmission on the 2017 Cadillac CT6 has proven to be the vehicle’s weakness and its performance makes it an extremely unpleasant car to drive. Shift points become corrupted, shifts between 1 and 2 can be violent and downshifts cause the vehicle to pulsate as it coasts to a stop”

GM releases fix for Cadillac CT6 Transmission Problems

Due to the numerous transmission complaints, GM released Service Update #N202318000 on July 14,2001 to fix a problem with the transmission wiring harness on the Cadillac CT6.

GM has identified that the transmission problem is due to a thermistor crimp in the wiring harness.  Cadillac dealers are instructed to replace the transmission wiring harness in affected CT6 vehicles.

The affected CT6 vehicles are:

  • 2017 Cadillac CT6
  • 2018 Cadillac CT6

Cadillac claims the CT6 “Exceed Expectations”, but based on the common Cadillac CT6 Problems & Complaints, it’s clear that many Cadillac CT6 owners are actually left with diminished expectations.
