Tacoma Transmission Problems – Year and Models

A reliable transmission is a critical component of a well-built and capable truck. However, thousand of Toyota Tacoma owners have complained about transmission problems resulting in hesitation and delayed shifting.   The Tacoma transmission problems of delayed engagement have been reported in the following Tacoma models 2018-2022:
  • Tacoma SR V6
  • Tacoma TRD Off Road 4×4 3.5L
  • Tacoma TRD Sport 4×4 V6
  • Tacoma TRD Off Road V6
  • Tacoma SR5 V6

The Most Common Tacoma Transmission Complaint

Delayed transmission shifting is one of the most common Toyota Tacoma Transmission problems. The delay between shifting occurs when the driver shifts between between gears such as neutral, reverse, drive, or park.  The delay between gears lasts between 2-4 seconds. Owners of the Tacoma can experience “lurching and jerking movement” once the transmission engages.  The lurch occurs when the transmission is engaged, and it happens very suddenly once it is engaged. Changing from park to reverse, for example, causes the truck to lunge forward.

The Toyota Tacoma transmission problems, or more commonly known as the “Tacoma Lurch” has not gone unnoticed.  According to MotorbiscuitThe Toyota Tacoma has one of the worst automatic transmissions out of any Toyota model.

Just read the Tacoma Transmission complaints reported with the NHTSA:

  • 2020 Toyota Tacoma TRD sport, transmission lurks from reverse into drive you have to press the brake pedal a little harder than normal to keep from lurking. Sometimes the vehicle seems to loose power when down shifting while accelerating (going around a corner). The truck also seems like its hunting for a gear around the 35mph or 43 mph, on flat surface, going down hill, or going up hill. This also happens on the interstate while going 65-70mph, which would be cause for concern. This feels like its a transmission issue but also could be an engine misfire of a spark plug or something. This happens on a daily basis.
  • With the Toyota Tacoma truck warmed up: pushing the gas pedal almost to the floor to enter traffic the truck just sat there and did not move this happened twice. The only way the truck would move was to push the gas pedal slow and enter the flow of traffic at reduced speed. With the truck warmed up: putting the truck in reverse and pushing on the gas pedal the truck did nothing. Taking my foot off the gas pedal while still in reverse the truck lunged backwards. I had to stop the truck with my foot on the brake. The truck lunged backwards in reverse twice while giving it gas. With the truck warmed up: stopped at a red light with my foot on the brake, i lifted my foot off the brake to move forward and the engine revved up and lunged forward i had to stop the truck with my foot on the brake because it was moving so fast and i was not pushing the gas pedal.

More Tacoma transmission complaints have been reported on Edmunds:

  • The Toyota…transmission is infuriating.  It is equally well documented that the [Toyota Tacoma] transmission hunts between 6,5, and sometimes 4 on the highway. The most infuriating thing about driving this truck is that the transmission just seems to never be in the right gear.”

Toyota Tacoma Transmission Problem Service Bulletin

Toyota has acknowledged Tacoma transmission problems and has issued a Service Bulletin #T-SB-0062-18.  According to the service bulletin “Some 2019 – 2020 model year Tacoma vehicles equipped with a 2GR-FKS engine and an AC60 transmission may exhibit one or more of the following conditions: Lack of power; Delay/Hesitation or Frequent shift change.  Toyota has advised Tacoma owners to have the Engine Control Module/ECM updated.

Other Toyota Tacoma Common Problems

In addition to the transmission problems with the Toyota Tacoma, other common problems have been reported.

Improper Ball Joint Finishing

Ball joints tend to wear out faster than usual in many Tacomas. The ball joints connect the wheels to the steering and control the navigation. Normally, ball joints wear out in trucks; however, the Tacoma’s process seems to be accelerated.   However, according to Motor and Wheels, the ball joint defect in the Tacoma is because Toyota did not properly do the finishing during production.

Mass Air Flow Sensor (MAF)

Toyota Tacoma’s mass air flow sensor, or MAF sensor, measures air entering the engine as part of the intake system. A bad MAF sensor can damage your Tacoma’s engine, so you should act immediately to avoid more expensive.

There have been a number of complaints about this part by Tacoma owners.  Mass airflow sensors that fail will cause the check engine light to illuminate. The following conditions can cause a mass air flow sensor to fail on a Tacoma

  • Dirt Buildup
  • Water Damage
  • Bad Connector or Electrical Wires

When your Tacoma has a bad MAF sensor, the engine can be damaged, which is why you need to take action immediately to prevent more costly repairs.
