Sunroof Water Chanel Stress Cracks
VW Tiguan’s panoramic sunroof is available as an option. Panoramic sunroofs are large glass panels that span the roof and can be opened to let in fresh air and natural light.
A defect in the VW sunroof can cause water to leak into the car’s cabin. Plastic water channels that run around the sunroof of the Tiguan have stress cracks that cause water leaks.
Water channels made of plastic expand differently than brackets made of steel, causing cracks where they meet. It only takes a small crack for water to enter.
Besides cracks in the plastic water channels, VW Tiguan owners also report defective rear drains that are “pinched shut” due to improper assembly.

Only had the car (VW Tiguan) 2 & a bit months, & we’ve had heavy rain for the last couple of days, so, this morning I jumped in, fired her up, & as I drove off I was showered with WATER!!! EH?? I seemed to pour from the rear-view mirror, all over the dash, screen, controls the lot. Front passenger seat as well.

Water leak rearview mirror? 2022 pro perf no sunroof…So I got in the car today after preheating it and water poured out of the place where the rearview mirror is connected to the car. There’s a very small hole there

A Tiguan with a leaky sunroof. This large sunroof has drainage hoses front and back, which had shrunk and become disconnected, causing water to leak into the front and into the boot. There was a considerable amount of water in the car and, as it had been there some time, caused a terrible moldy smell as well as some corrosion.
Electrical and Water Damage

VW Tiguan Sunroof Water Leak Technical Bulletins (TSB)
VW has issued technical service bulletins (TSBs) for the Tiguan and other models in response to the water leak sunroof problem.
According to the VW Tiguan Sunroof Water Leak TSB dealerships must “verify customer concern of water leak before starting repairs” by checking the following:
- Sunroof Glass Panel Check: Visually ensure sunroof panel molded seal and body side seal have no deformation
- Sunroof Drains Check: Check for blockage and proper draining
If the water leak check is performed and the glass panel and drains are normal, VW dealers are instructed to remove sunroof body side seal and repair.
Tiguan Sunroof Water Leak Class Action
Due to the Tiguan sunroof problems, class action lawsuits have been filed against VW.
On April 8, 2020 a class action, Ziarno, et al., v. Volkswagen Group of America, Inc., was filed in New Jersey alleging that VW knowingly sold Tiguan and other models with defective sunroofs that leak in the rain, damaging the cars’ interiors and electronics.
And in March 2020, another class action, Cole, et al., v. Volkswagen Group of America, was filed in California alleging lemon law violations for VW Tiguan owners and other models due to the leaking sunroofs.
