2019 Ford F-150 Engine Rattling Sounds – What is it?

Many Ford F-150 truck owners, with the 5.0 engines, have reported an engine rattling sound coming from the engine. This noise is typically heard when the truck is first started, and it may last for a few seconds before going away. In addition, the rattling noise in the 5.0 engine is also noticed during acceleration.

Here are two complaints by 2019 Ford F-150 truck owners for the engine rattling sound to NHTSA:

The contact owns a 2019 Ford F-150. The contact stated upon starting the vehicle, the engine emitted abnormal rattling sounds. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the failure was associated with the camshaft. The contact stated that the failure had been reoccurring. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline. The failure mileage was approximately 60,000.

Additionally, the contact stated that the vehicle was consuming an excessive amount of fuel. The contact later received an unknown recall from the manufacturer that was associated to the failure. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the engine synchronizers needed to be replaced; however, the parts for repair were not available. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and confirmed that the parts were not available. The failure mileage was approximately 35,000.

In addition to the many online reported complaints, one owner was able to video the rattling sound coming from the 2019 Ford 5.0 engine.

Ford is aware of the F-150 Engine Rattling problems and issued a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) 18-2354 labeled “5.0L – Engine Rattle Noise On Deceleration And/Or Acceleration“.

According to the Ford Engine Rattling TSB:

Some 2019 F-150 vehicles equipped with a 5.0L engine may exhibit an engine rattle noise during a deceleration tip-out throttle maneuver from 1500 RPM to 800 RPM and/or during an acceleration tip-in throttle maneuver around 2000 RPM. Reprogram the powertrain control module (PCM) using the latest software version of the appropriate Ford diagnostic scan tool

2019 Ford Engine Rattling Problems – Most Common Causes

Variable Cam Timing

The Problem:  Variable cam timing (VCT) has been identified as one of the main causes of the rattling engine sound in the 2019 Ford F-150. The VCT system adjusts the timing of the engine’s valves to optimize performance and fuel efficiency. In the event that the VCT system is malfunctioning, the engine can make a rattling noise.

The Cause:   The startup cam phaser rattle is caused by wear on the edge of the hole where the locking pin sits. The purpose of this pin is to lock in the VCT gears at startup so you don’t get startup rattles. As soon as the oil makes its way up the gallery and into the VCT, the engine stops making noise. It does not cause any damage, since the VCT’s are limited by a large surface area. If you leave a VCT as it is, it won’t break or wear down.

In our prior lemon law blog, we identified Ford Cam Phaser problems that included Ford engine rattling problems.

Noise Cam phasers can be noisy, which is one of their most common problems. The engine may make a ticking or clicking noise from the front.

Loose Heat Shield

The Problem:  A loose or damaged engine cover may cause the rattling Ford F-150 engine sound.

The Cause: Since the heat shield is made from tinfoil-type aluminum, it is very low-grade. Once the clamps that secure the shield loosen, the shield can bend or dislodge rather easily.  As a result, either the metal clamp or heat shield rattles or makes contact with other metallic components.  The metal clamps securing the heat shield become corroded and break over time, hanging or dangling on the exhaust pipe. Because the exhaust is always vibrating, either when idling or when accelerating, there will be a rattle.

93 Octane Fuel vs 87

The Problem: Lower-grade fuel is most likely responsible for your 2019 Ford F-150 engine rattling noise, especially if it occurs when you accelerate lightly and you can hear the constant rattling noise during throttle.

The Cause: When filling up, many F-150 truck owners use low grade fuel, such as 87 or 89 octane, to save money.  However, lower-quality fuel will provide less power and reduce gas mileage.

In more serious cases, you may hear engine knocking or valve chatter due to improper fuel ignition. Your engine could be damaged by these conditions, so you should switch back to 91 or 93 Octane.

When you hear constant rattling noises during acceleration, it’s most likely caused by low-grade fuel. High-grade fuel, such as 91 or 93 octane, can withstand higher compression before detonating. In general, the higher the octane rating, the less likely it is that detonation will occur at the wrong time.

Other Causes of the F-150 Engine Rattling Problems

  1. Loose or damaged engine components
  2. Worn or damaged engine bearings
  3. Damaged or worn transmission components
  4. Worn or damaged suspension components
  5. Loose or damaged drive shaft or universal joints.
  6. Damaged or worn timing chain
  7. Damaged or worn main and rod bearings
