The Repair:

Ford dealerships will replace the Ford Explorer backup camera and/or wiring and perform a software update. Replacement parts will be available once the repairs are complete.  However, many Ford Explorer owners are reporting that dealers do not have parts or cameras to replace with.

The Backup Camera Recall:

Over 383,000 Ford SUVs are being recalled in the U.S. because the touch screens may not display a camera image when backing up.

The Ford Backup Camera recall covers certain 2020 to 2023 Ford Explorers and Lincoln Aviators, and some 2020 to 2022 Lincoln Corsairs. All are equipped with 360-degree cameras.

Ford says in government documents that the video output can fail, preventing the rear camera image from being displayed. That can reduce rear visibility and increase the risk of a crash.

The 2023 rear-view recall expands and supersedes previous recalls by Ford to address the same issue in 2020 and 2023. In the past Ford performed a software update to the Image Processing Module (IPMB) to fix the malfunctions.

NHTSA campaign number: 23V022:

Ford’s own number for the Ford Explorer Backup camera recall is 23S02. This recall expands and replaces an earlier recall, which was campaign number 21V735.

Ford Explorer Owners Report Backup Camera Defects Online

Ford Explorer owners have turned to internet forums to complain about backup camera problems and malfunctions.

A 2022 Ford Explorer owner from Northampton, PA states to NHTSA:

Additionally, there was an extreme amount of air entering the vehicle from the door seals. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, who was unable to duplicate the failure, but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The dealer referred the contact to the manufacturer. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred her to the NHTSA Hotline. The failure mileage was approximately 5,100.

Another 2020 Ford Explorer owner from Florida reports to Edmunds:

When I went to pick it up the paperwork stated part on order…………..The dealer(Mullinax Ford West Palm Beach FL) told me while it was there for service ford recalled the new backup cameras and they had to return them all..
