2022 Ford Bronco Engine Problems

From 1965 to 1996, Ford Broncos were produced and sold for more than 31 years before they were discontinued. Almost 26 years after the last Bronco was made, Ford introduced the all-new Ford Bronco. In addition to its tough design and off-road capability, the newly updated Ford Bronco was expected to offer better reliability. Despite the updated changes to the all new Ford Bronco, many owners have been having problems with the engine.   Below is the lemon law information fo the 2022 Ford Bronco if you are experiencing engine problems.

Bronco Engine Problems

Numerous Bronco owners are experiencing engine failures.  According to the online Ford Bronco Forum, Bronco6G, the engine failures were traced to a valve train defect.  Members of the Bronco6g forum speculate that the engine valve failures might be linked to the engine build date (21133-21281), manufactured from May 13 to October 8, 2021.

One Bronco6G member alleges, the problem is due to weak valves, which become brittle from the heat of combustion over time and ultimately fail.  Consequently, the Bronco could lose compression immediately, and the metal could cause catastrophic damage. In order to repair the bronco engine defect, the engine must be replaced, which could take months.

There have been reports of engine failures in the 2.7-liter Ford Broncos, according to MotorTrend. Owners of Broncos have reported engine failures as early as July of 2021, with an average mileage of 2,491.

Ford is aware of the engine problems with the Bronco.  According to The Drive, a Ford spokesperson stated

we (Ford) are aware of a select number of engines with this concern and we are investigating. If any customers are experiencing issues, they will be covered under the vehicle’s five-year, 60,000-mile powertrain warranty.” We have contacted Ford for a response to this new NHTSA investigation and are awaiting their response.

2022 Ford Bronco Engine Complaints flood NHTSA

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has received 43 complaints regarding the new V6 EcoBoost engine in the 2022 Ford Bronco. Bronco owners have reported engine failures occurring in traffic, causing the Ford Bronco engine to stop suddenly.  A staggering number of engine-based complaints on NHTSA reference complete failures, many specifically indicating a problem resulting from a dropped valve

Read this 2022 Ford Bronco Engine complaint to the NHTSA:

The contact owns a..Ford Bronco. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle made clicking sounds and then lost motive power. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed with engine failure. The dealer informed the contact that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired and remained at the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 923.

Here is another Bronco Engine Failure report to the NHTSA by a California owner:

Engine failure. My wife was driving the vehicle and was enveloped in smoke and the engine stopped and she was stuck in the middle lane of a busy road in rush hour. A dangerous section of road a few miles from our house. I drove down and gave her my SUV and then called AAA who towed it to the dealership. The motor was dead. The vehicle was towed to Future Ford of Sacramento. They then diagnosed it a few days later and informed us that it is a complete engine failure and that it will take several months to get the vehicle back to us. There were no warning lights or any warning prior to the engine stopping and a large amount of smoke to the point that my wife thought the whole vehicle was on fire. Four people stopped to help her and get her to the side of the road.

Bronco Engine Failure Investigation by NHTSA

The NHTSA is investigating the engine problems with the Ford Bronco due to the numerous complaints it has received.  According to the NHTSA:

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) received three petitions on March 17, 2022, March 18, 2022, and March 29, 2022, requesting a defect investigation into an alleged defect of the “valves” on 2021 MY Ford Bronco vehicles equipped with the 2.7L Eco-boost engine. The petitions can be reviewed at NHTSA.gov under ODI numbers 11461178, 11460125, and 11460124.  The petitioners alleged that 2021 MY Ford Broncos vehicles are experiencing loss of motive power at highway speeds with no-restart due to catastrophic engine failures.

Know If Your Ford Bronco Engine Is Defective

Bronco engine failures are associated with the engine build date (engine numbers 21133-21281, manufactured May 13 to October 8, 2021), so it’s important to know when you build your engine.

To find out when your Bronco engine was built, you can easily check its build date.   The Bronco Engine build date is located around the oil fill tube on a square decal. There will be a string of numbers under the QR code—the engine’s serial number. Immediately following the first five characters are five numbers that indicate the date. You can decode the date code by using the first two numbers as the year of manufacture and the last three numbers as the Julian date.

For example, according to Motortrend:

if your serial number reads EA02Z21002990990, the number you’re looking for is 21002 in our example. “21” is 2021 and “002” would be the second day of the year or January 2. The Julian date is 001 to 365, but if you need help, a Google search of Julian Date and your number will tell you the day you’re looking for and, so far, the dates range from May 13 to October 8, 2021.

Ford has not recalled the Bronco Engine. In the event of engine failure, you should immediately contact the NHTSA and have it towed to a Ford dealer for repair.   The defective engine issue could affect thousands of new Ford Bronco owners as soon as the model is delivered.
