Although the 2024 VW Atlas boasts a number of advancements, it also faces a number of challenges. Owners of 2024 VW Atlas have complained about brake problems, engine problems, infotainment screen problems, and recalls.

2024 Atlas Engine Problems and Recall

1. Engine Problems

Owners of the 2024 VW Atlas have reported poor engine performance. There have been many complaints about sluggish acceleration and hesitation.

Just read this complaint from a 2024 VW Atlas owner to NHTSA:

The (2024) Atlas has been in the dealer on several occasions due to shifting and acceleration. On a couple occasions when starting the Atlas the RPM’s will redline with nothing touching the pedal and wont stop until we shut off the car. On several occasions the throttle has little to no response when pushing the pedal

Here is another engine complaint on VW Forum for the 2024 VW Atlas:

Picked up New 2024 Atlas R-line yesterday, drove of the lot with 80km on the vehicle. At 100km engine lights came on with Drive system error and care went into a limp mode. Dealership says that there are issues with the Turbo charger and a new one is being ordered.

2. Engine Recall

VW has also issued a engine recall for the 2024 Atlas. According to NHTSA Recall Number: 23V593000

Contamination during the bearing production process may have caused an increased particle occurrence in the engine oil circuit, which may lead to extensive wear and play and result in damage to the connecting rod bearings…this condition may result in engine failure, potentially causing a loss of motive power while driving and, in rare cases, a loss of engine oil, which may pose a risk of a vehicle fire.

Screen Suddenly Shutting Off or Blurry Display

2024 Volkswagen Atlas owners have reported an infotainment screens that suddenly shuts off or displays blurry or distorted images.

There are countless stories online about Atlas owners struggling with snowy and distorted infotainment screens.

Just read this screen display complaint by a Texas owner of a 2024 VW Atlas to NHTSA

The display which provides all vehicle information as well as guidance malfunctions (pixelates). Volkswagen acknowledges a faulty display chip is the cause. The dealer has updated software and even replaced the display with no success. I notified the dealer about the replaced display and he advised the VW has stopped the display replacement process. This means that potentially all 2024 Volkswagen Atlas vehicles are suspect. Without vehicle data accessible and no navigation available this distraction has created a hazard for driving on at least 2 occasions.

Brake Problems with the 2024 VW Atlas

1. Brake Recall – Master Cylinder

VW is recalling 2024 Atlas and 2024 Atlas Cross Sport cars due to brake master cylinder defects.

It is possible that a secondary piston spring retainer was installed incorrectly in the master cylinder, resulting in reduced brake performance or even brake failure.

According to VW Atlas Brake Master Cylinder Recall – NHTSA Number: 24V723000: Symptoms of the VW Atlas brake defect include a soft or spongy brake pedal, the smell of burning brakes, or reduced brake performance. A brake warning light may or may not illuminate if the issue occurs.

As reported by The Brakereport, a website dedicated to automotive and commercial vehicle brakes, VW learned about brake problems in August of 2024:

The problem was first identified on August 28, 2024, when Volkswagen production detected issues during the brake fluid filling process. An investigation revealed that incorrect spring retainers were installed in certain brake master cylinders.

2. Brake Noises – Screeching

Many VW Atlas owners have also complained about brake noise. A California 2024 VW Atlas owner stated to NHTSA the following:

Horrific screeching sound while braking. Braking when going down slight hill grinds and drags when braking. Brake sound occurs after car stops in addition to the grinding screeching sound during braking.
