Volvo Sunroof Water Leak Complaints

Numerous Volvo Sunroof Leak complaints have been posted online.  One owner reports on Edmunds, “I owned THREE XC90s. Not a typo. THREE! I purchased my 2016 which had 2 sets of brakes and 2 sets of rotors, a leaking sunroof, and multiple fails on electronics before Volvo replaces my car with a 2017 version”

Another Volvo owner complains about a sunroof water leak in Car Complaints, “Today, we learned our Volvo XC90’s yaw rate sensor has failed. The root cause was water leaking into the passenger side of the car due to blocked moonroof (I.e. sunroof) drains, which shorted the yaw rate sensor. This impaired the electronic stability control and brakes of our Volvo, putting us at risk of accident. Even though easy and inexpensive regular maintenance would prevent expensive damage, neither the Volvo user manual nor maintenance service operations guides mention the need. The damage we and others have suffered was completely preventable.”

Volvo has been aware of sunroof problems and has issued several technical service bulletins.   Below are the campaigns which relate to the sunroof problems:

  1. Volvo Sun/Moon Roof Water Leak: TSB Number:  TJ312722016041.  Summary: This is a technical journal: if customer complaints of water leakage, and the diagnose shows that it is coming from the rear sunroof cassette, please follow advice under service.
  2. Volvo XC90 Sun/Moon Roof Water Leak:  TSB Number:  TJ31272    Summary: Xc90 sunroof cassette rear leak sun/moon/convertible roof/water leakage description: if customer complaints of water leakage, and the diagnose shows that it is coming from the rear sunroof cassette, please follow advice under service.
  3. Volvo Sun/Moon Roof Auto Close:  TSB Number:  TJ31569   Summary: This software prevents the auto-close function from activating when the sunroof switch is pushed upward while the glass is in an open position.
