2019 Volvo XC60

The 2019 Volvo XC60 is a popular choice for consumers looking for a luxury SUV.  Volvo declares this model to be “smarter than ever,” with advanced safety features such as the collision avoidance system and top of the line in car infotainment system. However, based on the numerous infotainment and electrical complaints on the internet, it seems clear the XC60 is riddled with problems and not the smartest SUV out there.

2019 Volvo XC60 Electrical Problems

The electrical system in the 2019 Volvo XC60 controls all systems in the car, from the engine to the interior infotainment system. If the electrical system fails, it becomes a safety concern that could lead to an accident.

Here is one complaint on Edmunds by a 2019 Volvo XC60 owner with an electrical problem. “Don’t buy a 2019 Volvo XC60 SUV. There are so many electronics issues, and the dealership has an excuse for all of them. 1. The phone disconnects from the system after a couple of hours. VOLVO blames this on Apple CarPlay and says they can do nothing about it. This is after reading about how proud VOLVO is to have Apple CarPlay in their SUV’s in 2019. Please don’t offer it in your cars if you can’t figure out how to get it to sync with the VOLVO computer system. 2. The radio turns on in the car when the car has been turned off and the keys are in the house and the car is in my garage. VOLVO says that the car must be locked, in my locked garage – – in order for the car to be completely powered down. 3. The radio doesn’t consistently turn down when replying to a text. You never know when it’s going to work or not work. 4. With nothing on the passenger car seat, the red light in the instrument panel flashes on and off, indicating that the seatbelt should be turned on. So disappointed that I bought this brand new car and have absolutely no recourse.”

NHTSA Issues Recalls for the 2019 Volvo XC60

Volvo has been aware of electrical problems in the XC60 cars and other models, and has issued several recalls. Below are the campaigns which relate to the electrical problems

  • Campaign Number 18V800000: According to NHTSA, Volvo is recalling certain 2017-2019 Volvo XC60, vehicles. The software installed in the Vehicle Connectivity Module (VCM) may have an error causing the Telematics and Driver Support Systems to function improperly. As a result, the GPS will not provide location information to emergency personnel in the event of an emergency.
  • Campaign Number 18V589000: Volvo is recalling certain 2019 Volvo XC60 hybrid electric vehicles, equipped with certain electric vehicle TurboCord and TurboDock/TurboDX charging systems. Capacitors within these charging systems may fail, possibly resulting in a shock hazard or a fire.

Infotainment Problems with the 2019 Volvo XC60

The electrical problems with the 2019 Volvo XC60 are not just limited to GPS systems, but have also caused problems the infotainment systems.  Many owners have reported infotainment defects and have filed Volvo lemon law claims.

One owner reported in Edmunds, For me the biggest con is the infotainment and nav system. The infotainment system controls a raft of features, down to surprisingly fine detail in some instances. But that makes it really complex and hard to navigate. It seems needlessly complex in some ways, like audio and other settings existing in two separate menus (somewhat different controls in each) and something as seemingly simple as setting and moving through favorite radio stations is completely unintuitive. I find the nav system confusing and the street labels do not match on occasion on the heads up display, which is an otherwise cool feature. I prefer waze or google maps thru Apple Car Play, even though for some reason it isn’t able to integrate with the heads up display. And the whole system is pretty slow to boot up”

The 2019 Volvo XC60 is a luxury SUV, with the latest technologies and safety equipment. Volvo claims its cars will “Immerse yourself in a premium media and audio experience.” and that “Assisted safety. It’s in our DNA”.

Despite these the Volvo’s claims of safety and luxury, the 2019 Volvo XC60 falls short with a failing grade with constant electrical problems.
