2020 Volvo XC60 Electrical and Brake Problems:

Electrical System Problems

Volvo released a technical service bulletin addressing some electrical problems with the XC60. Service Bulletin TJ34618.6.0-2020 attempts to correct a screeching, scratching electrical noise owners hear when turning on the media system.

Owners have experienced other electrical defects.  For example, A Volvo XC60 owner complained to Edmunds about a defect in the electrical system

My car was fine for the first 12 months but then the electrical system just shut everything down twice. Both times the car was stuck inside my garage. The first time I was fortunate to be able to get it jump started. The dealer replaced the battery. Now, two months later and with owning this car for just 15 months I had to have it towed out of my garage and back to the dealer. Nothing functions at all and I doubt I’ll ever be able to trust this thing to ever work properly.

Another owner stated in Car Complaints about electrical issues with the Volvo XC60:

New most dangerous problem is that while driving (Volvo XC60) car the dashboard display turned into a bright barcode (I took a picture if needed). Stopped car at red light and upon restarting car same problem existed

Brake Problems

According to Volvo, safety is their top priority.  Owners are complaining about problems with the automatic braking system (ABS), which is a huge safety concern.

The braking system in the XC60 and other models, such as the Volvo XC90 are failing to detect obstacles and not engaging when needed.

As a result of numerous Volvo owners complaining about brake problems, Volvo has issued a recall.

The Volvo brake recall, involving 120,000 cars, affects every 2019-2020 model-year Volvo vehicle, including the S60, V60, V60 Cross Country, S90, V90, V90 Cross Country, XC40, XC60, and XC90.

The Volvo brake recall, 20V-144000 is due to a braking computer defect controlling the Automatic Emergency Braking system,  missing obstacles and not engaging the brakes.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recall report, a defective software code is to blame, which will be corrected through an update to the Active Safety Domain Master (ASDM).

A complaint by a Volvo XC60 owner reported by NHTSA says

While driving 45 mph, when the vehicle began to decelerate independently [the driver] depressed on the brake pedal to stop the vehicle. The [driver] stated no warning light was illuminated. The [driver] stated she continued to drive to her destination

Owners have also been complaining about defects with the XC60 rotors. On the NHTSA another owner said

One day after getting car the rear rotors were defective and had to be replaced…  This car is a lemon. And only 16 months old.

It is highly unusual to replace rotors under 25,000 miles.  The life of a rotor should last for at least 15,000 miles to 25,000 miles.
