Engine Problems – Complaints and Recall

2019 VOLVO XC90 COMPAINTS

According to Car and Driver,  the 2019 Volvo XC90 can be had in three engine versions, “all of them riffs on the theme of Volvo’s 2.0-liter turbo four“.  However many drivers are experiencing problems with the Volvo turbo engine.  A 2019 Volvo owner from Florida reported to NHTSA:

I WAS DRIVING WITH MY THEN 6 MONTH OLD BABY WHEN MY VEHICLE SHUT OFF TWICE. AS I WAS DECELERATING, MY VEHICLE ENGINE SHUT OFF BY ITSELF AND ALL SCREENS IN THE VEHICLE WENT BLANK. THIS OCCURRED TWICE WHILE DECELERATING. VOLVO HAS HAD MY CAR SINCE MARCH 6, 2019 PROVIDING ME NO UPDATES AS OF TODAY, MARCH 19. I HAVE ONLY OWNED THE VEHICLE 94 DAYS AND IT HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP 35 DAYS, WITH ONLY 2387 MILES ON IT.

Another 2019 Volvo XC90 owner from South Carolina claimed to NHTSA

THE CONTACT OWNS A 2019 VOLVO XC90. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE STALLED. A FUSE WAS REPLACED BY VOLVO CARS OF GREENVILLE (2668 LAURENS RD, GREENVILLE, SC 29607, (864) 288-5555); HOWEVER, THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO STALL AND WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 8,000

Problems with the Brakes – NHTSA Complaints and Recall

Braking problems have been reported by many 2019 Volvo XC90 owners. The Volvo Forward Collision Avoidance, or automatic emergency braking, is malfunctioning.

The following is an actual NHTSA complaint about the 2019 Volvo XC90 braking Problem:

The contact owns a 2019 VOLVO XC90. The contact stated that while her foot was on the brake pedal and while talking with a friend outside her vehicle, she had decided to place the vehicle into park. After approximately 8-10 minutes, the vehicle independently accelerated forward without warning and crashed into her friend’s garage door.

Volvo Brake Recall for the 2019 XC90

Volvo has issued the following brake recall for the 2019 XC90.  According to NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V144000, the Volvo XC90 automatic emergency braking system (AEB) in the 2019 Volvo XC90 may not always engage, increasing the risk of collision.  Volvo will notify owners, and dealers will update the Active Safety Domain Master (ASDM) software for the braking system.

Problems with Electrical System

Similarly, there seem to be a lot of problems with the electrical system with the 2019 XC90.  Just read this complaint about all screens going blank to NHTSA:

ON MARCH 6, 2019 I WAS DRIVING WITH MY THEN 6 MONTH OLD BABY WHEN MY VEHICLE (2019 Volvo XC90) SHUT OFF TWICE. AS I WAS DECELERATING, MY VEHICLE ENGINE SHUT OFF BY ITSELF AND ALL SCREENS IN THE VEHICLE WENT BLANK. THIS OCCURRED TWICE WHILE DECELERATING. There is even a recall, NHTSA Campaign Number: 18V800000, from Volvo that discusses electrical problems.  According to the recall:

The software installed in the Vehicle Connectivity Module (VCM) may have an error causing the Telematics and Driver Support Systems to function improperly. As a result, the GPS will not provide location information to emergency personnel in the event of an emergency. Volvo will notify owners, and dealers will correct the software, free of charge.
