2021 Cadillac Escalade

2021 Cadillac Escalade

The 2021 Cadillac’s Escalade is the brand’s flagship SUV, capable of carrying seven passengers in style and luxury. The 2021 Cadillac Escalade will mark the model’s fifth generation, and Cadillac reports that the new version is significantly more luxurious, stylish, and technologically advanced than the original.  While the 2021 Cadillac Escalade is more luxurious, many owners are experiencing electrical problems with the airbag and seatbelt warning lights, brake problems, lane keep assistance and super cruise problems resulting in frequent trips to the dealer for repairs.

Electrical Problems with Airbag and Seatbelts Warning Lights

The 2021 Cadillac Escalade has a very sophisticated electrical system, controlled by the Body Control Manager (BCM).    If the BCM does not work properly the electrical system in the Escalade will malfunction resulting in a dangerous condition and the car not operating correctly. Unfortunately Cadillac has recalled the 2021 Escalade because of a software defect with the BCM causing a defect in the electrical system.

The 2021 Cadillac Escalade recall centers around the SUV’s body control module.   The problem appears to originate from a software glitch in the BCM, according to CarComplaints.  In short, important warning lights such as those for seat belts and airbags can go into night mode under certain conditions.

When these warning lights are switched to night mode, the brightness decreases significantly, making them difficult to see during the day.  The inability to see the warning lights results in a very dangerous condition to the driver and passengers. For example, front-seat passengers may not know their airbag is deactivated or they’re not wearing a seat belt.

One 2021 Cadillac Escalade owner report to NHTSA

The contact owns a 2021 Cadillac Escalade. The contact stated while driving 40 mph, the dashboard indicator began to flicker and then went blank. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer…where the mechanic was unable to diagnose the cause for the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 20.

Brake Problems

The Cadillac Escalade comes equipped with advanced automatic braking system.  The Escalade automatic braking system uses onboard sensors to detect the possibility of a collision. In an emergency situation, the emergency braking system will automatically stop the car without the driver’s help. However many Escalade drivers are reporting problems with the braking system and it not working correctly.

When driving on the city streets of Chicago I approached a movable bridge which spans the Illinois river. The bridge deck was constructed of steel. As I was about to begin crossing the bridge my car brakes locked up completely, sending the vehicle into a short skid. Fortunately, the car behind me was not tailgating me or I most certainly would have been struck in the back of the vehicle. This is a brand new vehicle which I took delivery of on May 14, 2021. There were no warning lights or indications that anything was malfunctioning on the vehicle. I can only guess that all of the steel in the bridge decking somehow was interpreted by my vehicle to be another vehicle, and automatically slammed on the brakes in the mistaken assumption that I was about to hit another vehicle ahead of me. In fact, there was not another vehicle ahead of me for about 100 yards.

Lane Keep Assistance Problems and Super Cruise Problems

The 2021 Cadillac Escalade also has lane keep assist and lane departure warning.  Lane keep assist (LKA) is an advanced driver-assistance technology that prevents you from unintentionally drifting out of your lane. The LKA uses a front-facing camera to detect lane markings, and intervenes if you drift toward or over them without using your turn signal. The system uses steering correction and/or selective braking on the opposite side of the vehicle to push you back into your lane. In addition the Escalade has Super cruise which also has automatic lane change.   Some Escalades owners are experiencing lane keep problems  and super cruise problems due to malfunctioning systems.

The following is an example from an Escalade owner as reported on NHTSA

I recently purchased a 2021 Cadillac Escalade with Supercruise driver assistance system. There have been at least 5 instances where I attempted to turn off the Supercruise function and the system does not allow me to regain control of the vehicle. For example, I will turn off the Supercruise fuction by hitting the Supercruise function on the steering wheel and it will begin to flash red on the steering wheel. I will move the steering wheel slightly to let the system know I am taking control of the vehicle but the vehicle does not recognize my input. The car will start to slow down, turn on the flashers, and announce over the speakers to “Take Control of the Vehicle.” The main issue is that the car will fight me and not allow me to accelerate to keep up with traffic. There are sometimes when supercruise turns off without incident, but my issue stems from when Supercruise mistakenly thinks that I am not in control of the vehicle and slows down.
